Abstract

716,223. Statistical apparatus. POWERS-SAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. April 28, 1953 [Aug. 21, 1952], No. 21063/52. Class 106 (1) Apparatus for feeding a record card to a sensing position and removing it rapidly therefrom after sensing against a card stop, comprises a pair of co-operating feed rollers to advance the card into sensing position placed so that when the leading edge of the card is arrested by the card stop, the trailing edge is freely located in the bight of the feed rollers, a pair of eject rollers located between the card stop and the feed rollers, a pivoted support for the freely rotatable feed roller, provided with light spring tension to bring the eject rollers together and pressure means to increase the pressure between the eject rollers (above the light spring pressure) whereby the card is firmly gripped between the eject rollers and is removed thereby from the sensing position. Cards are fed from the magazine 1, Fig. 2, by known means not shown to rollers 2, 3, and thence by feed rollers 4, 5, to the card stop 10. The upper roller 4 is freely rotatable and is pivoted at 11 on a bell crank lever 12 which is pivoted at 13 and urged towards the power driven roller 5 by a spring 15. When the sensing operation is complete and the card stop 10 is withdrawn the eject rollers become operative to remove the card rapidly from the sensing position. The eject rollers 8, 9 are mounted between the card stop 10 and the feed rollers 4, 5, the lower roller 9 is power driven and the upper roller 8 is freely rotatable on a bell crank lever 20 pivoted at 21 and urged towards the roller 9 by a light spring 23. When the card stop 10 is withdrawn in the usual manner, by means not shown, shaft 50 and the arm 49 are rocked tb allow the abutment 47 on the plate 46 to contact the bell crank 20 and since the spring 48 is stronger than spring 23 further pressure is applied to the eject rollers which were able to slip during the sensing operation, but under the increased pressure now applied, grip the card firmly and remove it from the sensing position, to rollers 56, 57, or other part of the apparatus receiving the card. The extra pressure is applied at the correct moment (synchronized with the withdrawal of the card stop) by means of a cam 55 mounted on shaft 42, Fig. 1. The cam follower 54 rocks the bell crank lever 52 which engages the lever 51 fast on the cross shaft 50 to rotate it and hence rotate the arm 49 bearing on the pressure plate 46 to render it effective. A further cam 41 on shaft 42 is effective through cam follower 40, lever 38, lever 37 and cross shaft 30 to close together a pair of lateral card alignment levers 24, 25, to align the card laterally whilst it is pressed against the card stop 10. The levers 24, 25, are withdrawn during passage of the card into and out of the sensing position.
