Abstract

731,995. Feeding sheets. POWERSSAMAS ACCOUNTING MACHINES, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1954 [March 30, 1953], No. 8796/53. Class 100 (1). Sheet-separators.-Sheet-separating apparatus, with special provision for ensuring that only one sheet at a time is separated, comprises a magazine 1 for a pile of sheets 4, a suction device 17 carried by a reciprocating carriage 20 whereby a sheet is detached from the pile and presented between two feed rollers 7, 8 which complete the withdrawal of the sheet, and at least one friction pad 53 which moves into engagement with the bottom sheet to move it laterally of the pile prior to its seizure by the suction device 17. The magazine 1 has front stops 2, and a slotted base 3 whereby the suckers and friction pads can engage the bottom sheet. Three suckers 17 are secured to a hollow tube 18 journalled on the carriage 20; they are oscillated to engage and withdraw the front edge of the bottom sheet by cam and lever means operated from a drive shaft 9, and suction is established to them through a valve also controlled by similar cam and lever means. Further levers operated by cams on the shaft 9 vertically reciprocate a slide 42 on which the carriage 20 is mounted, and the roller 7, and horizontally reciprocate the carriage 20. The roller 8 is continuously rotated by gearing from the shaft 9. There are four friction pads 53 formed of cork and rubber mounted on the carriage 20. In operation, when the leading edge of a sheet has been delivered between the rollers 7, 8, the carriage 20 moves to the left and at the lower level. Before completion of the carriage return stroke, the carriage is raised to the higher level, and the friction pads 53 engage the bottom sheet in the pile and move it back a short distance away from the front stops 2. The suckers 17 are now oscillated to seize the front edge of the bottom sheet and deflect it away from the pile, and the carriage is moved to the right to deliver the sheet between the rollers 7, 8, and then lowered for the return stroke. The roller 7 is lowered on to the rotating roller 8, and the sheet is completely withdrawn from the magazine.
