Abstract

445,376. Feeding sheets. RATCLIFF & SONS, Ltd., J., Junction Foundry, Wortley, Leeds, and BELL, W., 2, South Terrace, Barwick-in-Elmet, near Leeds. Dec. 21, 1934, No. 36653. [Class 100 (i)] In connection with a sheet-feeding device for printing-machines, the sheets are registered against front stops 21 and a side register by frictional feeding means in the form of a roller 4 with which coact adjustable rubber-covered nip rollers 5, the roller 4 being reciprocated axially towards the desired side register and moving the sheet by its rotary motion against the stops 21. In a modified form the sideregistering movement may be the rotary one and the front-registering movement the axial one. The axial reciprocation is obtained by a cam 9 engaging a roller on a shaft 14 which transmits its motion to the shaft of the roller 4 and also to the shaft 30 which carries the nip rollers 5. The cam 9 is oscillated by a crankmechanism 11, 12 which may be arranged to give a quick return to the roller 4 after the registering operation. The roller 4 is driven by sprocket gearing 7 from the shaft of a cam 28 which operates by lever-and-link mechanism 29, 27, 26, 25 the shaft of the front stops with which is correlated the oscillating movement of the shaft 30 so as to raise the rollers 5 after the registering operation. The shaft 30 is fitted with a number of adjustable brackets 31 which are arranged to receive vertical pivots about which the arms 19 carrying the nip rollers 5 can swing in a horizontal plane. By means of a screw 35 and nuts 36 the rollers 5 can be adjusted for sheets of different thicknesses, and springs 37 are provided for returning the rollers 5 to their central position if deflected therefrom by the axial movement of the roller 4. The rotary and axial movements of the roller 4 may be effected by means of springs so as to prevent the marking of sheets by rubbing action.
