Abstract

630,336. Sheet-feeding apparatus. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. July 14, 1947, No. 18677. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1941. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] A sheet - feeding device is constructed with a detector for detecting the passage of multiple sheets as they pass over a feed roller 111, Figs. 2 and 5, a switch controlled by the detector, and means for adjusting the relation of the detector to the sheet without changing the adjustment between the detector and the switch. The invention is described in connection with sheet feeding and separating mechanism as described in Specification 630,363 which is divided from the present application, and which forwards sheets from a pile W, Fig. 2, to forwarding rolls 111, 112 from which the sheets pass to a rotary offset printing - machine. As the sheets pass through the forwarding rolls 111, 112 they are acted up by a gauge or detecting device comprising a roller 180, Fig. 5, mounted in a lever 182 pivoted in an adjustablymounted bracket supported by rods 176, 177. A roller 186 carried by the lever 182 is arranged between an adjustable screw 188 and a pin 187 of a sensitive electric switch in the circuit of an electromagnet 184. The switch is set with one sheet between the rollers 180 and 111 so as to be just open. If, however, two or more sheets are fed between the rollers 111, 112, the electric magnet is energized and a deflector plate 223 is operated to divert the sheets and prevent them from passing to feed rolls 220, Fig. 2, which together with feed tapes 240 and rollers 221 and other forwarding devices advance the sheets to a rotary offset press. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises means for advancing the pile W intermittently. Pile-advancing means.-The pile W is supported by a table 45, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), attached to chains 50 fitted with a counterweight and passing over sprockets on a shaft 56. To raise the pile a hand-crank 60 can operate the shaft 56 by means of bevel and worm gearing. The movement of the crank 60 to clutch it to a drive gear 62 operates a lever 40 which moves a pawl 99 out of contact with a ratchet-wheel 97 by means of which the pile is raised under control of means acting on the pile. This control comprises a latch 91, which at the end of its return movement can hold a pawl-carrying frame and so prevent actuation of the shaft 56. If, however, the pile is low, the latch 91 is tripped by a pin 90 on a reciprocating link 76 having a yieldable connection with an oscillating lever 74 actuated by a crank 71 driven by the impression cylinder of the offset press. The link 76 is controlled by an oscillating bail, which is moved into contact with the pile at each rotation of the press. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
