Application May 1-1, 1933, Serial No. srono'o J I6, claims. (01; 101-283) invention is. directed, broadly, to novel' means. for. bringing the bed and cylinder into printing. coaction. providing: a sheet has b'een fed to-ithe press properly registered, sa-id be'd and cylinder remaining out. of said printingcoac tion'. should a; sheet fail t'o be fed to the press.-
.My'invention more particularly consists in elec'--' trically controlled mechanical means for raising and-lowering the impression cylinder; said-mechanical means comprising a toggle lever, adif ferentialgear for opening and closing the toggle lever to. cause the. raising and lowering respec tilvely oflthe impression cylinder, and an electric brake? for the differential gear, said brake being controlled by the bed as it reaches -the limit of* its printing stroke. and. by a light responsive de-' vice, as a photoelectric unit, as the bed-reaches the limit of its-non-printing stroke.
Izhave chosen to illustrate my invention in" connection with the bedand cylinder printing press shown in fulllines inthe positions they assume as the-registered sheet is about to be taken from the feeder by thei'orin bed grippers onthe print-- ing stroke of the bed, andin dotted lines inthepositions they assume as the bed reaches the end of its-printing stroke; 7

The electric brake'2 8 isconnected directly to a source'ofelectric current supply, not shown herein} through the circuit wire 35. The electricbrake Z8 is also under the control of a light responsive device such, for instance;- asa photoelectric unit which' i's inturn controlled bytlie registry ofl the sheetcm the sheetfeeder 5; as is clearly shown in my copending application filed December 17, 1932, SeriaI No:fi l lfllfnow Letters Patent: 1395 1 301) datedTQMarch 20, 1934 i This photoelectric unit is connected i open the switch 36 and the circuit through the,
through the circuit line 46 to theside guide 41 of the sheet registering device, the operation of which is fully explained in my said Letters Patent 1,951,901. This photoelectric unit comprises, generally, the following elements:
The photoelectric tube 38 is electrically connected to the photoelectric relay 39 of any well known or approved form. This photoelectric tube 38 is positioned beneath the feed table 5 in the path of a beam of light projected from the lamp 4!]. This relay 39 is electrically connected to the electric brake 28 through thecircuit wires 4|, 42. The circuit wires 4 I, 42 are also connected through a circuit maker and breaker 36 to a normally open switch, which circuit is closed when the toggle lever is closed, and open when the toggle lever is open. This relay 39 is also electrical- 1y connected to a source of electric current supply, not shown herein, through the circuit Wires 44. 45.
In operation: As the bed 3 reaches the limitv of its non-printing movement and presupposing that a sheet has been fed and registered so that it is in position to be taken by the grippers H of the bed, the registry of the sheet will out off the beam of light from the lamp 40 of the photoelectric unit, thereby closing the contactor switch 48 and completing a circuit through the electric brake 28, thus causing the brake to hold the differential shaft 24 against rotary movement. This will permit the constantly driven shaft 23 to rotate the differential shaft 22 to move the toggle lever I3, I5 in the direction to lower the impression cylinder I into printing position. As the toggle lever moves in this direction it will 28 as the differential shaft is rotated one-half arevolution, the freeing of the differential shaft 24 rendering the drive between the shafts 23 and 22 ineffective, Also as the toggle lever l3, l5 movesin the said direction it will close the switch 31.
As the bed reaches the limit of its printing movement its lug 33 will engage the switch arm 32, thus closing the circuit throughthe circuit maker and breaker 29 andthe circuit wires 39, 3|, thereby energizing the brake and causing it to again hold the differential shaft24 stationary. This will permit the drive shaft 23, to rotate the differential shaft 22 to break the toggle lever, thus permitting the expansion springs [2 to raise the impression cylinder out of its printing position. As the toggle lever l3, I5 is opened it will again open the switch 31, thus deenergizing the electric brake 28, thereby releasing the differential shaft 24 and rendering ineffective the connection between the drive shaft 23 and crank shaft 22.
It will be understood that if no sheet is fed to the form bed grippers If on the printing stroke of the bed the electric brake 28 will remain deenergized, thus allowing the springs 12 to hold the impression cylinder I in its raised position out of printing coaction with the form bed.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and
hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described,
