which the following is a specification, referonce being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in printing presses and its object is to secure by a single action the effectual control of all the functions of the machine, including the feeding of the sheets to the platen, and the tie livery of the sheets after printing to the delivery table. 1
According to this invention the operation of the sheet gripper mechanism, the mechanism for locking the sheet and grippers in printing position to secure register, and the mechanism for holding the grippers at feed position when desired and thus arresting the printing operation. are all controlled by means of cams arranged on a single main shaft, while the mechanism operating the grippers and that operating the type bed are moreover so connected as to insure that both are simultaneously at printing position.
This invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a platen )rinting machine embodying the invention; ig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cam and mechanism for operating the gripper arm; Fig. 4 is a side view of the cam and mechanism for opening the grippers when at the feed board; Fig. 5 is a side view of the cam and mechanism for locking the gripper arms at printing position to secure register, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the cam and mechanism for arresting the feed and printing when desired.
On the main shaft 1 of the printing ma chine, which may be driven through spur gear 2, 3 from any suitable source of power through fast and loose pulleys 4:, 5, there are keyed the cam 6 for controlling the movement of the grippers from feed to printing and thence to delivery positions, the cam 7 for opening the grippers at feeding position, the cam 8 for locking the grippers at printing position, and the cam 9 for arresting the printing operation when. desired. The grippers 10, normally closed by their springs, are
mounted on a bar 11 carried by arms 12; and on the bar 1 1 there is mounted a bar 13 carrying a roll 14. The arms 12 are keyed on an auxiliary shaft 15 set in hearings in such position as to allow the grippers 10 to swing in an are from the feedboard 16 to printing position 1O" and thence to delivery position 10 as shown in dotted lines in F 1.. The swinging of the grippers 10 and arms 12 from one to the other of these positions is effected by suitable mechanism controlled by the cam 6, such as a roll 17 running on the periphery of this cam and attached to a rack 18 engaging with a toothed wheel or segment 19 keyed on the shaft 15. The rack 18 is supported by a roll 20 journaled in. the framework of the machine, and at its lower end is connected with a lever 21 journaled in the machine framework on a shaft 22.
In Figs. 1 and 3 the cam 6, arm 12, and rack 18 are shown at feed position, a dwell or concentric portion 6 (Fig. 3) being provided in this position to allow time for feeding the sheet; and. at 6 there is provided a second dwell to provide time for printing when the grippers are at printing position 1O (Fig. 1). At feeding position the grippers 10 are opened. by the roll 14 which then runs on the cam-like curved face of the lever 24 journaled at 25 on the machine frame. The lever 24 is connected through a rod 26 with a lever 27 that is journaled on the shaft 22 and carries a roll 28 running on the edge of the cam 7. The form of the last mentioned cam is such that the lever 25 rises allowing the grippers to close just as they leave the fecdboard 16. When the grippers and their arms arrive at printing position 10 12 (Fig. 1) these parts are locked to secure accurate register of the printed sheet by the action of the cam 8, on which there runs a roll 29 carried by a lev or 30 connected with bell-crank levers 31. that actuate sliding bolts 32; the arrangement being such that, at printing position, the rise 8 on the cam 8 through the levers 30, 81, causes the bolts 32 to enter holes 33 in the arms 12 to look these arms until the printing is completed. The grippers and arms then move to the posltions 10*, 12 (Fig. 1) at which point the grippers are opened by the action on the roll 14 of a fixed cam-lilrc portion Se on the frame of the machine. The shaft 15 has at each end an eccentric 34: the throw of which is'so arranged that whenthe grippers are at printing position 10 these eccentrics are at pivotally dead center. The eccentrics 34 are connected by side bars 35 to the arms 36- that actuate the type bed 37, with the result that when the gripper mechanism returns from delivering position 10 to feeding position the eccentrics, side bars and cranks"v remove the type bed 37 away from the impression platen 38.
When the operator desires to check the gripper operating mechanism Without stopping the running of the main shaft 1, the levers 21 and 27 are kept in their highest positions by the operation of a two- armed lever 39, 40 mounted on a shaft 41. The arm 39 carries a roll 42 thatruns on one or other of a pair of tracks 43, 44 on' a duplex cam 9; these tracks being connected by a gate 45 so arranged as to be opposite the roll 42 when the grippers are at feeding position and the type-bed off the platen. When the gate 45 is in this position, the roll 42 can be caused to pass through it from the track 43 to the track 44 by means of a treadle 46 on the lever arm 40, the lever arm 39 then assuming the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6. In this position a projection 46 on the arm 39 engages and supports the prolongation 47 of the lever 27 while the upper end of the lever 39' at the same time engages with and supports the end 48- of the lever 21 thus preventing the rolls 28, 17 from following their cams and arresting the printing operation. The throwing of the roll 42 through the gate 45 may also be effected by means of a handle 49 having a projecting lug 49.- When this handle is turned from the vertical: position into the position shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 6, the lug 49 assumes its lower position 49 (see Fig. 6) compressing the spring 51 which then tends to depress the rod 52. When the handle 49 is turned into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6 by dotted lines, the lug 49 thereof assumes its upper position 49 (see F ig. 6) compressing the spring 50 which then tends to raise the rod 52. It will be obvious that by this means the roll 42 can be caused at the proper time to pass inwardly or outwardly through the gate 45, the corresponding spring 50 or 51 being then relieved from compression.
The frisket frame 53 is operated by a cam 54 on the main shaft 1 through a connecting rod 55 to bring the tympan fingers 56 in contact with the sheet with slight pressure as it arrives at printing position thus flattening the sheet upon the platen and rigidly retaining it in position during printii'ig. The cam 54, as indicated in Fig. 2, may be similar to the cam 8 controlling the locking device, so that the sheet is held by the frisket while locked in printing position. The type-bed 3-7 is not actuated merely by the rotation of the auxiliary shaft 15 carrying the eccentrics 34 operating the link 35, but its main movement is derived from the main shaft 1 through a crank 57 thereon which through a connecting rod 58 and arm 59, rocks the shaft 60 on which the arms 36 and. 59 are :keyed. By this means the type-bed is brought near to-say of an inch off the platen 3 8, v the actual printing impression being then made by the action of the eccentrics 34 which have their maximum throw to the left in Fig. 1 when the links 35 and arms 36 overlap and are at their dead points. It will be seen that when the gripper operatmg mechanism is checked in the manner described, the rack 18 and lever 21 being stationary the eccentrics 34 will not operate to produce the printing impression.
What I claim is I. In a printing press the combination of a main shaft, an auxiliary shaft, arms mounted thereon, grippers carried by said arms, a pluralitv of cams on said main shaft, and: means actuated by said cams for moving said grippers from feeding to printing position and thence to delivery position, for opening the grippers at feeding position, for locking them at printing position, and for arresting the printing operation when desired.

In a printing press, the combination of an auxiliary shaft, a pair of arms secured thereon, grippers carried by said arms, a toothed wheel or segment on said auxiliary shaft, atoothed rack engaging with said wheel or segment, a main shaft, a cam thereon, a roll mounted on said rack and adapted to run on said cam, a leveradapted to open the grippers at feeding position, a second cam on said main shaft, a roll adapted to run on last mentioned cam, and mechanism connecting this roll with said lever to open the grippers at feeding position.
In a printing press, the combination of an auxiliary shaft, a pair of arms secured thereon, grippers carried by said arms, a toothed Wheel or segment on said auxiliary shaft, a toothed rack engaging with said wheel or segment, a main shaft, a cam thereon, a roll mounted on said rack and adapted to run on said cam, a lever adapted to open the grippers at feeding position, a second cam on said main shaft, a roll adapted to run on last mentioned cam, mechanism con necting this roll with said lever to open the grippers at feeding position, a third cam, a roll adapted to run thereon, a lever carrying said roll, bolts adapted to lock said gripper carrying arms at printing position, and bellcrank levers connecting last mentioned lever with said bolts.-

In a printing press, the combination of an auxiliary shaft, a pairof arms secured thereon, grippers carried by said arms, a toothed wheel or segment on said auxiliary shaft,- a toothed rack engaging with said Wheel or segment, a main shaft, a cam thereon, a roll mounted on said rack and adapted to run on said cam, a lever supporting said rack, a two-armed lever one arm of which is adapted to engage and support the last mentioned lever, and which carries a roll; a cam having two tracks connected by a gate, the roll on said arm adapted to travel in one or the other of said tracks according to the po sition of said arm, and a treadle on the other arm of said two-armed lever.

the roll on said arm adapted to travel in one or the other of said tracks according to the position of said arm, and a treadle on the other arm of said two-armed lever.
6. In a printing press the combination of a main shaft, an auxiliary shaft, arms mounted thereon, grippers carried by said arms, a plurality of cams on said main shaft, and means actuated by said cams for moving said grippers from feeding to printing position and thence to delivery position, for opening the grippers at feeding position, for locking them at printing position, eccentrics at the end of said auxiliary shaft, a swinging type bed, arms connected therewith, and side bars connecting said eccentrics with said arms.
