PLATEN PRINTING-MACHINE.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK HARRILD` and JOHN FREDERICK BUCKLAND, both of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platen Printing- Machines, (for which we have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 13,006, bearing date July 3l, 1891,) of which the following isa specification. Our invention has reference to platen printing machines and its primary object is to construct in an economical manner a machine having two type beds and two impression platens corresponding respectively with the two beds, the operation being such that while the one platen is moving from the corresponding bed after having received the impression the other platen is moving toward its bed to receive the impression; the machine is thus capable of turning out double the ordinary work of an ordinary machine. having only one platen, inasmuch as when this'platen is moving from the type bed after an impression has been taken the machine is as it were inoperative.
Ourinvention consistszinthecombination of two type beds set back to back in an oscillating or vibrating frame, two impression platens situated opposite the two type beds respectively and movable toward and from the said beds, and mechanism whereby the one platen is caused to move toward its bed to receive the impression while the other platen is moving from its bed and vice versa. Also, in the combi-nation with two type beds set back to back in an oscillating or vibrat- 1ng-frame,two impression platens situated opposite the two type beds respectively and movable toward and from the said beds, and mechanism whereby the one platen is caused to'rnove toward its bed while the other is moving from its bed, of two inking tables and two sets of inking and distributing rollers carried by the same roller wings. Also, in mechanism whereby either of the sets of inking anddistributing rollers can be thrown off in case of need. Also, in mechanism whereby either of the impressions can be altered or adjusted, as required independently of the other, or either of the impressions can be thrown off in case of need.

Referring to the drawings a a are two type beds carried back to back in aframe b which has an oscillating or vibrating motion upon a shaft or axis at c communicated to it by means of rods d. ,These rods areconnected at one end to a transverse shaft e which passes through the oscillating frame h and at the other to crank pins ff one of these being carried by the gear wheel g and the other by the cam disk h on the same shaft c' as the wheel g. ZZ are the two platens. The platen' Z is carried by a piece m which is mounted on a rocking shaft n and has a crank arm p carrying-a roller or truck q which is acted upon by a cam r formed on the inner face of the wheel g. The platen Z at the other end of the machine is similarly mounted on a rocking shaft n and has a crank arm p which receives motion from a rod S the opposite end of which carries a roller or truck q which is acted upon by a cam Ir' in the disk Zz, this disk being carried by the same shaft t' as the wheel g as has been already stated. The rod S is slotted at S to allow of the shaft 'i passing through it. The platen Z is shown as receiving the impression and the platen Z in the position for taking the white sheet. t t are lugs or stops one at each end of the machine, against which the tail of the corresponding platen piece comes and by which it is arrested when the platen has reached the position for taking the impression. In order to provide for holding either platen out of work if required without stopping the operation of the other platen there is at each end of the machine a pivoted catch piece u which is normally in such a position as seen at the left hand of Fig. l that the tail of the platen piece will clear it, but the catch piece can be moved when requiredinto the position seen at the right hand of Fig. l so as to hold the platen `out of work; this movement of the catch piece 'LZ is given by means of a spring plate o caused by an eccentric w actuated by a handle to act on the tail of the catch piece. The eccentric w is lixed to the shaft of the handle fr. By moving the handle acfrom the position seen in full lilies in Fig. 8 to thatindicated in dotted lines in said figure, the eccentric w is partly rotated and allows the lower end of the spring plate 'v to recede from the catch piece, and this then descends of its own gravity, still keeping in Contact with the catch piece. Then by returning the handle the eccentric will push the spring plate inward and this plate will therefore lift the catch piece a.
.A and A are the two sets of inking and distributing rollers for inking the forms on the two type beds a a respectively and B B are two corresponding inking tables. The two sets of rollers are carried at an angle to each other by the roller wings C C which are connected together by the transverse shaft C and are caused to oscillate owing tothe oscillating motion of the frame Z2, which carries it combined with the action of the connecting rod D which is pin-jointed at one end to the frame of the machine, and at the other end to an arm E on one of the roller wings.
In order to allow of either of the sets of inking and distributing rollers A A being thrown off in case of need as for instance when the corresponding platen Z or Z is not in use or is temporarily stopped weadopt the following arrangement: To each side of each of the inking tables B B we hinge at Q the upper end of a bar R which is normally flush with the face of the type bed. The lower end of the bar which is slotted at R is connected to one end of a lever T by means of a pin T on the lever working in the slot R. The lever T is fixed on a rod U and connected at its other end to the upper end of a rod V, see Figs. 1, 2 and 4. The lower end of the rod V is connected bya pin V to a treadle lever W which has its fnlcrurn at X. These parts are duplicated, that is to say each half of the machine is provided with such parts as shown in the drawings and each of the rods U eX- tends across the machine so as to serve as a fulcrum to an arm at the opposite side such arm corresponding with the lever T. When either of the sets of inking and distributing rollers has to be thrown off the attendant pushes down the outer end of the treadle lever W whereby the rod V is raised and the lever T caused to turn with its rod U andV with the corresponding arm at the other end of this rod. The bars R at each side of the corresponding type bed are consequently moved outward 011 their hinges Q, so that the corresponding inking and distributing rollers by running over the said bars are kept from` contact with the type bed and these are therefore not inked. The treadle levers W are slotted at Y so that the pins V may not act upon them in the oscillating movement of the frame b.
F F are two rods which provide for altering either of the impressions as desired independently of the other, or for throwing off either of the impressions in case of need. These rods are connected at one end to an arm G on the transverse shaft e and each of them at its other end passes through a guide H. Oppo site this end of the rod is an adjustable screw or stop I carried by a disk J. rlhe normal position of the screw and its carrying disk is seen at the left hand of Fig. l, and also in Fig. 7. Each disk with its screw can be moved so as to shift the screw out of line with the rod F, and this movement is preferably given by lifting the disk into the position seen at the right hand ofFig. l and also in Figs. 5 and 6 by turning a handle K. When the screw I is in line with the rod F the rod comes against it as the type beds oscillate to that end of the machine and by acting upon the arm G lixed to the shaft e and thus giving a turning movement to this shaft `an eccentric e on the shaft causes the corresponding type bed to move more or less forward, whereby the required amount or degree of impression is effected; this degree is varied as found desirable by more or less screwing up or unscrewing the screw I so as to cause the rod F to come in contact with it sooner or later and thereby give a greater or less forward movement to the type bed. sion the screw I is lifted as seen at the right are in the position seen at the left hand of Fig. l and also in Fig. 7 the rod M passes through a hole in the disk J and is inoperative, b ut when the disk and screw are in the positlon lseen at the right hand of Fig. 1 and also 1n F1gs.5 and 6 and the rod F has to pass into the disk as above described the rod M comes againsta full part of the disk and is thereby c aused to act on the arm G and give a partial turn to the shaft e so as to move the type bed from the platen. We thus render thev working of one end of the machine independent of t-hat of the other.
The stops for the rods F and M are best constructed as shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, wherein F is the rod which provides for altering one of the impressions; H is the guide through which said rodworks, I is the adjustable screw or stop which is normally opposite the end of F, J is the disk which carrles the screw I and through which it works, and K is the handle for moving the disk J and screw I from the position seen in Fig. 7 to that seen in Figs. 5 and 6 and vice versa. The handle K is mounted on a shaft K passing through the part K2 of the framework of the machine and having at its inner end a crank pin K3 engaging with a slot K4 in the' disk J. In the disk J is a vertical slot K5 which in the movements of the said disk works on a fixed guide pin K6. M is the supplementary rodand P its guide; the rod M normally works through a hole Min the disk J. When by moving the handle K from the position'Fig. 7 to the position Figs. 5 and 6, the disk J is raised, the hole L comes opposite the rod F and a full part of the disk J comes opposite the rod M with the result above described.
rI he arrangement above described vfor alterlng or for throwing off the impression is also applicable to single platen machines, in which case only one of the rods F, screws I, disks J and rods M will be employed.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a platen printing machine the combination of two type-beds set back to back in a vibrating frame, two impression platens situated opposite the two type beds respectively, and mechanism to cause the one platen to move toward its bed to receive an impression while the other platen is moving from its bed, substantially as hereinbefore described.
2: In a platen printing machine, the combination with two type beds set back to back in a vlbrating frame, two impression platens situated opposite the two type beds respectively, and mechanism to cause the one platen to move toward its bed while the other is moving from its bed substantially as and for the purpose set forth, of two vibrating inking tables and two sets of inking and distributlng rollers carried bythe same oscillating roller wings substantially as set forth.

5. In a platen printing machine, the combi-- nation with two 'type beds set back to back in a vibrating frame, two inking tables vi-v brating with said type beds, two sets of inking and distributing rollers running over said tables and said type beds and two impression platens situated opposite and operating in conjunction with said type beds respectively, of barswhich are normally iiush with the face of saidtype beds and mechanism whereby l said bars can be moved into a position in which they divert the inking and distribut-V ing rollers from said type beds substantially as and for the pu rpose hereinbefore described.
6. In a platen printing machine, the combination with an ad justablevibrating type-bed, of a movable arm vibrating with said bed and engaging it to adjust it, a rod connected at one end to said arm and vibrating therewith for moving it, and an adjustable stop in line with the other end of said rod and limiting the outward movement thereof, whereby according to the adjustment of Vsaid stop, and the consequent greater or less limitation of the movement of said rod, the position of said arm and the adjustment of said vibrating type-bed are controlled, and the impression is regulated, substantially as set forth.
7. In a platen printing machine, the combination with an adjustable vibrating type-bed, a movable arm vibrating with said bed and engaging it to adjust it, a rod connected at one end to said arm and vibrating therewith for moving it, and an adjustable stop normally in line with said rod and limiting the movement thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described, of a secondk movable arm vibrating with said bed and engaging it for adjusting it, a second rod` connectedk at one end to said second arm and vibrating there` with for moving it, astop for saidsecond rod,
and mechanism for shifting said adjustable stop out of line with said first rod and bringing said second stop into line with said second rod, whereby thev vibration of the latter is Y limited thereby, said second-arm is moved:
and said bed adjusted, and thereby said bed may be thrown off while said first rod vibrates past said adjustable stop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a platen printing machine, the combination with an adjustable vibrating type bed, a movable arm vibrating with said bed and connected thereto to adjust it, a movable rod connected at one end to said arrn and vibrating therewith for moving it, and an adjustable stop normally in line with said rod and limiting the movement thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described, of a movable disk carrying said adjustable stop and having two holes, one of larger diameter than said rod, normally out of line with the latter, and movable into line therewith upon displacement of said disk, and the other hole normally in line with and receiving the end of a second rod, the said second rod, and a second movable arm to which the other end of said second rod is connected, said second arm vibrating with said type bed and engaging it for adjusting it, said second rod being movable, vibrating with and connected to said second arm for moving it, whereby when said disk is in its normal position said first rod in its vibrations comes against said adjustable stop and the end 0E said second rod passes through the said second hole in said disk, and when said disk is moved into its other position the end of said rst rod passes through said first hole and the end of said second rod comes against a full part of said disk, substantiallly as and for the purpose set forth.
