SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 773,009, dated October 25, 1904:.
Application filed April 22, 1904.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANs Form, a subject of the German Empire, residing at 7 Kohlgartenstrasse, Leipzig-Reudnitz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Color-Printing Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
"This invention relates to an improvement in color printing and stamping presses by means of which it is possible, according tothe nature of the colors and printing-plates employed, to apply color to the plates either once ortwice before each printing without any greater attention being required from the printer or layer-on in the latter case.
In the color printing and stamping presses constructed in the manner of toggle-lever presses it often happens that very troublesome colors are used which do not readily adhere to the brass types, for which reason the laying-on of the, color has to be repeated. Consequently in presses of the kind mentioned this operation is encountered by many diificulties, as all the working operati0nssuch as the laying of the color on the printingplate, the running-in of the carriage, the printing, and hereupon the running-out of the printing-platemust be completed with a single revolution of the main shaft, so that an increase in'the number of the color-rollers and a consequent necessary enlargement of the color-roller course is impossible owing to a lack of time. For this reason the repeated printing and stamping presses can only be effected by temporarily stopping the run-out sliding carriage and plate, so that at its next revolution the main shaft will set all parts of the machine in motion except the carriage, but only the color-rollers will actually work. Devices of the kind are already knownin connection with color printing and. stamping presses, but only imperfectly fulfil their purpose, as they require that at the given time the printer. shall couple or uncouple the sliding carriage with the carriage-actuating device by hand.

WVhen the uncoupling device is put into engagement, the following working operations are effected: If the machine, with the sliding carriage run in, has executed a printing move- I O0 ment and thereupon the run-out carriage a has reached its extreme position, Fig. 1, the segment-lever 1/ is caused by the cam-disk to swing downward and the shaft correspondingly rotated, so that the arms with the supporting-arms k and connecting-rods g, are moved upward, whereby the catches in the connecting-rods leave the pins 92, Fig. 3, so that upon the shaft further rotating the 0seillating arms cl cannot participate in the movement of the parts of the machine, which with the exception of the coloring mechanism m, Fig. 5, are running idly. Only when the main shaft w'has finished its second revolution are the connecting-rods g lowered by the action of the cam-disk s and so connected with the oscillating arms (Z that the carriage a is pushed in for the following printing.
The device for automatically raising and lowering the connecting-rods g is only illustrated by way of example, as the mechanism required for the purpose may be of very Varied form. All that is necessary is that the connecting-rods 9 should lie with their gabs on pins n of the oscillating levers (Z and be connected by means of supporting-arms Z; and levers p with the shaft 0-, to which at a given time a motion is impartec l by means of a part of the machine, which only rotates once while the main shaft 20 rotates twice, so that the connecting-rods g are released or engaged.
In order that the machine may also be employed for lighter printings, which do not require a second laying on of color, the automatic coupling and uncoupling device should be constructed so that it can be put out of action. In the form illustrated this can be el'- feeted by simply removing the pin from the cam s.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a printing-press, in which the printi ngplate is carried on a reciprocating carriage, oscillating levers (7 adapted to reciprocate the carriage, pins 12 on the levers, connectingrods g provided with gabs which engage the pins, and means for automatically disconnecting the rods 5 from the levers (Z after each printing movement and automatically connecting same again after the printing-plate has received two applications of color.
2. In a printing-press in which the printingplate is carried on a reciprocating carriage, oscillating levers adapted to reciprocate the carriage, pins '12 on the levers, connectingrods provided with gabs which engage the pins, and means for automatically disconnecting the rods 1 from the levers (Z after each printing movement and automatically connecting same again after the printing-plate has received two applications of color, said means comprising the arms Z' shaft r, segment-levers 1 shaft a, lever w, and camdisk s, which latter only is adapted to rotate once while the main shaft is eli'ecting two revolutions.
