[Class 100 (i)] In a sheet-feeding machine of the kind in which the sheets are fed over a board to movable front stops from which the sheets are taken by transfer mechanism, a smoothing member is provided at the front end of the board so as to flatten or straighten out the edge of the sheet prior to being taken by the transfer mechanism, the member having the form of a plate which extends across the mechanism substantially from one side to the other. In one form a rock shaft 3, Figs. 3 and 5, is fitted with a number of front stops 7 which are of spring material and are secured by screws 16 to forward parts 6 of castings 5 on the rock shaft 3. To the underside of the castings 5 is secured a smoothing plate 11 with a curved end 13, the front end of the plate 11 being situated close to the stops 7 which are arranged at the front of the feed board 1. The plate 11 is preferably made of transparent material. From the raised position of the stops 7 shown in Fig. 3, the stops are first lowered on to the board 1, and on further movement of the shaft 3, the stops 7 yield as shown in Fig. 5, and the edge of the smoothing plate 11 presses on the sheet and smooths the front edge. The sheet is finally carried forward by grippers on oscillating arms, the grippers being arranged to act between the stops 7 and to coact with notches in the plate 11. In a modification, Fig. 7, the plate 11 is rigid with the shaft 3 and the stops 7 are mounted so as to be capable of movement relatively to the shaft 3 against the action of a spring 29. In further modifications, the stops 7 and the plate 11 are mounted on separate oscillating shafts 3, 23, Fig. 6, arranged above the feed board, or on an oscillating shaft 3 arranged below the board and a similar oscillating shaft arranged above the feed board.
