Abstract

1290043 A machine for the continuous wrapping of articles SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE-GES 3 Sept 1970 [4 Sept 1969] 42109/70 Heading B8C In a machine for the continuous production of rectangular packages a band 1 of wrapping material from a roll 2 is wrapped, at 4 in tubular form, around rectangular articles 5 supplied by a conveyor 7 and a longitudinal, downwardly extending flap 1a, formed during wrapping, is sealed, either as shown by heated rollers 8 or by, an adhesive at station II. At station III a synchronously-moving knife blade 10, cuts the top and side walls of the tube without cutting the bottom surface. Individual folding operations are carried out at stations IV to VIII where a series of interconnected frames 13, each carrying a folding member 14, move, at the same speed as the wrapping 1, in an endless guide path 11 each folding member 14 having a shaft 15 with a roller 16 which is urged by springs 12 into engagement with a fixed cam member 18. A folding member 14 is moved between two adjacent articles 5 at station IV to fold portions of the upper tube face 22 against the end faces, Fig. 4, of the two adjacent articles and form triangular side flaps 23 which are then folded inwardly, after the folding member 14 has been raised, by two horizontally movable bodies 19, which arelocated at station V and also synchronously move with the wrapping 1. Blades 46, at the front ends of the bodies 19 cut into the bottom of the tubular wrapping so that the adjacent pair of packages are connected together solely by the flap (1a), Fig. 5, not shown. The folding member 14 is lowered again at station VI so that a blade 20 folds the flap la up into the plane of the bottom surface of the package. A second cutting device 25 at station VII cuts through the flap 1a. The folding body 14 is lowered slightly at station VIII so that the forwardly directed bottom flap 24 is folded beneath the package by a folding member 26 and subsequently sealed thereto. The rear bottom flaps 24 are folded up at station IX the flap being first bent downwardly by a rotary arm 27 and then folded beneath the package by a rotary folding disc 28. The completed sealed package is moved by a conveyor 29 out of the machine. The second cutting device Fig. 9 not shown, comprises a housing (25) which is rotatable to have a peripheral speed equal to the feeding speed of the packages and which has a blade (37), which is raised to project from and housing (25) and lowered again, by a pinion (35) and rack (34) which is reciprocable by cam and lever mechanism (40, 41, 42). A package may contain more than one article.
