Abstract

1355466 Wrapping articles M BURNSIDE 20 Sept 1972 43456/72 Heading B8C A length of plastics wrapping material 58 whose leading end is located on a conveyer 20 beneath the article 48 to be wrapped is carried over and in front of the article 48 by a wrap bar 52 carried between endless belts 1, the article is then advanced from the conveyer 20 to a conveyer 68 so that the trailing end of the wrapper 58 is also located beneath the article, the wrapper ends are then heat-sealed together and the wrapper is shrunk around the article. The article is fed to the conveyer 20 from a conveyer 18 with the leading end of the wrapper positioned on conveyer 20. When the article passes a photo-electric cell 46 a wrapper feed conveyer 26 is actuated to feed the wrapper at the same speed as the conveyer 20. When the article reaches a second photo-electric cell 70, the conveyer 20 is stopped and the belts 1 driven so that the wrap bar 52 carries the trailing end of the wrapper 58 over the article and between the conveyers 20 and 68. The belts 1 are then stopped by a timing mechanism and the conveyer 20 restarted, the trailing end of the wrapper being trapped beneath the article as it moves between the conveyers 20 and 68. Whilst the wrap bar 52 carries the wrapper 58 around the article, a wrap bar 56 also carried by the belts 1 moves a depending length 60 of wrapping material from a roll 28 against a pivoted weight bar 36. When the wrap bar 56 reaches a pressure plate 40 the bar 36 pivots and the material 60 contacts a heated cut-off wire 38 severing the wrapper 60 from the roll of material. The severed end of the wrapper 60 is then fed by rotation of the wrap bar 56 against the pressure plate 40 to rest beneath a pivoted guide finger 42 on the conveyer 20 in readiness for the next article (48<SP>1</SP>). In a modification, the pivoted guide finger 42 is replaced by an air pressure pipe (43) which intermittently produces an air jet to guide the end of the wrapper 60 on to the conveyer 20.
