Abstract

1,114,708. Packaging-machines. WIX OF LONDON Ltd. 8 Oct., 1965 [9 Oct., 1964; 14 May, 1965], Nos. 41326/64 and 20558/65. Heading B8C. In a wrapping machine, an article A, Fig. 2, to be wrapped, is placed in a pocket 6 in and intermittently rotating drum 1 at a feed station. As the drum rotates, moving the article from the feed station to an ejection station, wrapping material W, held by suction on the surface of the conveyer, is drawn over the exposed surface of the article, so that when it is ejected from the conveyer the wrapping material extends over its exposed and adjacent sides. The web W of regenerated cellulose or other plastics material is fed through draw rollers 2, guide rollers 3 and a clamping device 4 to the drum 1. If required, a tear strip T may be applied to the web W before it arrives at the rollers 2. In one embodiment, Figs. 1-5 (not shown), the partially wrapped article is ejected from the drum by a device inside the drum against the tension of the wrapping material, a length of which is cut from the web by a knife 9 after the article has been ejected. The wrapping material is then folded over the top surface of the article by a suitable folding device (not shown), the partially wrapped package being then pushed into a folder box in which the wrapping is completed. In a second embodiment, as the article A arrives at the ejection station, clamps (11), (12), Fig. 6 (not shown), the former being mounted in the drum, close on the article, which is ejected while held by both clamps after a length of the wrapping material has been cut from the web. The leading and trailing ends of the wrapping material are then folded round the article and the overlapping portions heat sealed together. The package finally passes means for folding and heat sealing the wrapping material over the ends of the package. The apparatus can be used to provide a wrapper which is open at both ends.
