Abstract
1,072,377. Wrapping-machines. SUNDS VERKSTADER A.B. April 2, 1965 [April 21, 1964], No. 14089/65. Heading B8C. A stack 71, Fig. 1, of compressible sheets, e.g. cardboard blanks, is bundled by pushing it into a paper tape 18 held normal to its direction of motion, so that the tape is wrapped round three sides of the stack, which is compressed during this operation. The tape is then separated from a roll 17 and its two ends glued together at the trailing end of the stack. In the embodiment the tape 18, drawn from a roll 17, after passing an idler roll 26 engages an edge folder 27 which folds the edges of the tape inwardly to provide reinforcement. The tape is creased along these fold lines in passing between the rollers 64 and 65 and is then fed between jaws (61, 62), Fig. 4 (not shown), of a releasable gripping device. At the inlet end of the conveyer 31 the bundle is straightened on all four sides by a series of rods (44) and 46, Fig. 2 (not shown), on the two sides, a gate mechanism 54 at the forward end and pusher bars 56 and 57 at the trailing end. It then advances into the wrapping station where its motion against the tape 18 causes the tape to be wrapped round the three sides of the stack. In this position the bundle 71 is compressed by means of a compression unit 72, manually adjustable by a wheel 73 to allow for different sizes of bundles. A laterally movable knife blade (82), Fig. 3 (not shown), carried on carriage (81) cuts the tape after the carriage 81 has moved down into the position of Fig. 3 (not shown). At the same time the jaws (61) and (62) release the other end of the tape upon which adhesive is then applied by a roller (84) in contact with an adhesive fountain (89). This roller then moves upwards and presses the end portion of the tape against the trailing end of the bundle 71. The other end of the tape is then lapped over the adhesived end, a roller (91) applying pressure to the seam. With the reciprocating carriage (81) in this position the jaws (61) and (62) are opened and a further supply of tape 18 is fed into them to provide for the next cycle of operation. With the closing of the jaws upon the tape, the wrapped bundle is sent to a second station still under compression where it stays until a second bundle is wrapped and sealed in the same manner. A cycle start button (122), Fig. 5 (not shown), is actuated by placing a bundle of material on the inlet of the conveyer. The conveyer is actuated as the gate mechanism 54 is retracted between the conveyer belts. The feeding of the tape end to the jaws (61, 62) energizes an electric eye (155) which stops the feeding of the paper strip into the jaws and moves the reciprocating carriage 81 upwards. The machine is then ready for another cycle of operation.
