Abstract

1,069,624. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. TAPE ENGINEERING Ltd. Nov. 4, 1963 [Nov. 5, 1962], No. 41748/62. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A cutting and sealing unit is traversed across a stretched web, cutting and simultaneously sealing one of the cut ends against a surface beneath the web. The sealing may be effected by heat sealing, adhesive, or by applying an adhesive tape. The unit may form a hand tool, or may serve in a wrapping machine to cut off and seal a wrapper, or may serve in a machine for winding a paper, textile or plastics web on to a mandrel. In a web-winding (Fig. 13, not shown) the cutting and sealing unit may cut a web (R<SP>1</SP>), after it has been wound on a mandrel (R<SP>2</SP>), and then seal down the end of the mandrel. Alternatively (Fig. 14, not shown) after the web has been wound on one mandrel, it is cut and the trailing end is secured to a further mandrel (R<SP>2</SP>) on which the next roll is to be wound. In a wrapping machine (Fig. 2, not shown) the cutting and sealing unit cuts from a web (H) a wrapper which has previously been wrapped around a cylindrical article (A), and at the same time seals the wrapper down by applying a length of adhesive tape. The knife M (Fig. 4) cutting the web, a co-operating anvil M<SP>6</SP>, and rollers M<SP>1</SP> pressing down the adhesive tape, are all carried by a carriage J which is traversed across the web, being guided in a head (D) (Fig. 2) which serves as described in Specification 1,058,632 in disposing the web around the article (A). The tape may be fed from a reel R<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 4) from which it is drawn by clamps M<SP>5</SP>, J<SP>2</SP> on the carriage J as this moves in the non-operative direction across the web: this stroke may occur before or after the sealing stroke. During the non-operative stroke the knife M and anvil M<SP>6</SP> are lifted above the web.
