Abstract

979,808. Unwinding webs. JOSEPH ECK & SOHNE. July 9, 1962 [July 8, 1961], No. 26355/62. Heading B6B. A web 42 unwound from a roll 4 supported in bearings 17 passes around a pressure - applying roller 40 and a roller 37. A replacement roll 5 is mounted in bearings 24 slidable along side plates 2, 3, by means of a pair of cylinders 28. Preparatory to a splicing operation a coupling 31 is engaged with a coupling 12, such that the roll 5 is accelerated to the linear speed of the web 42 by a motor 47 and a drive/brake unit 9. The roll 5 has an adhesive area 49. When the roll 4 has almost expired and a sensing means 45 indicates that the area 49 is correctly placed the roller 40 is actuated to splice the web 42 to the roll 5. A cylinder 50 then actuates a knife to cut the web 42. When the roll 5 has been partially unwound whilst being braked by the motor 47 running as a generator, the bearings 24 are moved towards the bearings 17 and locking slides 21 of the bearings 17 and 24 are lowered to permit transfer of the roll 5 to the bearings 17. The bearings 24 are then retracted to receive a replacement roll. The roll 5 is then braked by a brake 33 actuated by a cylinder 34, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification the roll mounted in the bearings 17, Fig. 1, is braked by a generator 53, Fig. 4 (not shown), instead of the brake 33.
