Abstract

1,177,431. Web winding. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. 22 Sept., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 43295/67. Heading B8R. Apparatus for winding a web on a plurality of mandrels comprises a winding drum, at least one turret equipped with a pair of mandrels, means for rotating the mandrels in the same direction as the winding drum in an orbit adjacent the winding drum, a rider roller which rotates in contact with a web being wound, and which moves out of contact when the mandrels are alternated, and cutting means operably associated with the rider roller for severing the web following alternation of a fully-wound mandrel for an empty mandrel. General arrangement (Fig. 1).-A web 16 is guided by a feed roller 17 and dancer roller 19 to a longitudinal slitter 33, and is then fed by nip roller 30 to a winding drum 13 which is preferably chrome-plated; the respective parts of the web are then passed to turret winders 10, 11. In Fig. 1, turret 10 orbits or indexes about shaft 27 in the indicated direction as web roll 40 builds up on mandrel 25; when roll 40 is complete, the turret undergoes further indexing to bring mandrel 26 to position 26<SP>1</SP> and to bring the completed roll to a removal position. Turret 11 illustrates this latter position, with web roll 41 complete at removal position, mandrel 42 ready to wind a further roll and the web 161 about to be cut between the roll 41 and the mandrel 42. The winding drum 13 and the mandrels all rotate in the same direction; thus, the surfaces of the web rolls are always spaced from drum 13, the webs being led partially by rider rollers 31, 32 which ride on the web roll surfaces throughout winding except when a roll is alternated to removal position when the roller, e.g. 32, is displaced, by pneumatic means, to position 32a. A gear train (not shown) drives all the rollers and drums including drum 13, turrets 10, 11, mandrels 25, 26, 41, 42 and the rider rollers 31, 32. Auxiliary rider rollers 52, (54) are also provided on each turret with pneumatic means for moving them into contact with a complete web roll to prevent unravelling, or into contact with an empty mandrel during cutting (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). Cutting means.-The web 16<SP>1</SP> is severed by a knife (43) which is supported between two arms (39) which also support the rider rollers 31, 32, so that the web is severed when the rollers are disengaged from a wound web roll (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). Cutting is performed under the action of a pneumatic cylinder and piston unit.
