1481168 Web roll supports MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 13 Aug 1974 [15 Aug 1973] 39556/73 Heading B8R Apparatus for supporting web rolls during winding thereof comprises a pair of chucks 41 for engaging the web roll core and a carrier 39 for each chuck, the chucks being movable with their respective carriers along respective support means during winding. Each support means 22, 23 has rails (37), Fig. 6 (not shown), 38 along which rollers 40 on the carriers can move, so that as winding of a roll, e.g. R1, Fig. 1 against a winding roller 5 proceeds, the carriers are pushed back along the rails. The two support means 22, 23 are adjustably mounted on a platform 14 by pinions 50, 51, Fig. 3, which engage racks 20, 21 on the platform. By manual operation of handles 52, 67, the positions of the support means can be adjusted axially of the web roll core for capture and later ejection thereof. When winding is completed, pneumatic cylinders 13, Figs. 1 and 2, are operated to pivot the platform and associated support means, carriers and shoots about point 9 to an unloading position. The roll R1 is urged against the winding roller 5, during winding, by two pneumatic cylinders, e.g. 75, Fig. 3 via linkages 70, 78, 72, one cylinder acting on each chuck so that the nip pressure across the roll can be varied. The cylinders are leaked as winding proceeds, to adjust the nip pressure, and when winding is completed, the cylinders pull the roll R1 away from the winding roller, the carriers actuate a microswitch 42, and unloading commences. Additional, pneumatically operated, nip rollers (105), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be provided. The chucks are of the expansible type. The apparatus may be duplicated to wind two or more rolls R1, R2, R3 against the same winding roller, e.g. for winding slit webs.
