Abstract

1377643 Changing web rolls MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 4 Feb 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4044/71 Heading B8R In a method of and apparatus for changing a web roll in a winding operation, a completed reel 4 is moved away from a rider roller 9, which remains stationary in position, to draw out a length of web W, a guide roller 11 is moved into the path of this length of web to engage the web on the side which will be outwards on the new reel, the rider roller 11 is moved further away from the completed reel, a new reel core 5 is then moved into the path in close proximity to the guide roller to cause the web to envelop the greater part of the core circumference and a knife and transfer mechanism 12 is actuated to cut the web between the core and guide roller and transfer the cut leading end to the new core. The completed reel and new reel core may be mounted on pivotable arms 3 of a reel stand 1 whilst the rider and guide rollers are mounted on pivotable arms 7, 8 actuated by pneumatic cylinders 10, 13. The arms 3 are rotated through 130 degrees to draw out the length of web whilst the new reel core is rotated at the linear speed of the web. The arms 8 then advance the guide roller to the web and the arms 7 retract the rider roller. Next the arms 3 rotate through a further 50 degrees to bring the new reel core into contact with the web, the rider roller then being moved to a position resting on the new reel core. Finally, pneumatic cylinders 16, 22 are actuated to bring the knife and a transfer brush mechanism, and a back-up bar 20 respectively, together to sever the web, for instance as described and claimed in Specification 1,377,644. The whole operation is initiated manually and is controlled by electrical and pneumatic circuits including limit switches operated by cams on the axle of the arms 3.
