Abstract
1,109,796. Wrapping-machines. WIX OF LONDON Ltd. 14 Sept., 1966, No. 39821/65. Heading B8C. An article is wrapped by suctionally holding wrapping material 6 (Fig. 1) over the pocket mouth of a cylindrical conveyer 5, pushing an article 8 together with the wrapping material into the pocket leaving the leading and trailing portions of the material outside the pocket, behind which the material is cut, whereupon the leading and trailing portions of the material are folded over and sealed to each other. As described, a film of wrapping material 6 is passed over a roller 13, where it is mated with a tear strip 7, between clamping members 23 and on to the surface of the hollow drum 5, on which it is held by suction through pipes 42, Fig. 2. A parallelepipedic container 8, fed on a conveyer 25, is pushed from an elevator platform 27 into the pocket by a cam-operated pusher 43 so that the film 6 is wrapped around three sides of the container 8. During reciprocation of the pusher 43, the suction means and clamping members 23 are released and the leading edge of the film 6 is clamped by a spring biased clamp 46 and a plate 47 mounted on the pusher 43. The clamping members 23 are then actuated by cams to grip the film 6, which is severed by a cam-operated cutter 48, whereupon the drum 5 is rotated to station B, during which the trailing edge of the film 6 is folded on to the end of the container 8 by an arm 41 associated with the pocket. At station B, compressed air is blown on to the leading edge and a folder arm 28 and a heated sealing element 29 cammed inwards to fold over and heat seal the leading edge to the trailing edge. The drum 5 is rotated to station C where the wrapped container 8 is pushed out of the pocket by a pusher 45 into a channel 33, the sides of the film 6 being folded on to the container by folding slots 34, 35 and heat sealed to each other by reciprocating sealing elements 36. The wrapped package is finally lifted on to a conveyer 38 by an elevator paddle 37. Simultaneous with the ejection of a wrapped container 8 at station C, a new container is inserted at A and the container positioned at station B is sealed. The film 6 may alternatively be sealed around the container 8 by adhesive.
