Class 73 [Also in Group XVII] An end seal for a bread wrap is provided with parallel lines 8, Fig. 7, of perforations and is coated with thermoplastic adhesive except for the portion 9 between the.lines 8, the seal being applied over the end flaps of a wrapped loaf of bread by applying relatively heavy pressure on the seal over a central zone 22 transverse to the lines 8, applying relatively light pressure over the remainder of the area of the seal and simultaneously heating the seal to adhesively secure it on the end flaps. The arrangement is such that on tearing away the portion 9 as shown in Fig. 10, the upper and lower portions of the remaining parts of the seal are comparatively lightly adhered to the flaps B, D which facilitates the unfolding of the flaps without tearing of the wrapper. Means for applying the seals is shown in Fig. 2 in which the end portion 2 of a conventional wrapping machine is duplicated at each end of the loaf 3 which is carried through the machine transversely to its length. A strip of seals 7 is fed from a roll adjacent feeding and cutting mechanism 5 with the lines 8 of perforations extending vertically with respect to the horizontal travel of the loaves 3. The individual seals are severed and are initially applied to the flaps by reciprocating heated plates 10 carrying spaced horizontal ribs 11, this preliminary joining occurring principally with flaps A and C along the lines of the ribs. The loaf then moves forwardly and the seals are finally applied by reciprocating heated sealing plates 12 each having an elongated blister 13 which exerts a relatively heavy localized pressure upon the central portions of the seals, while the areas of the plate 12 above and below the blister 13 exert a lighter pressure upon the other portions of the seal.
