Abstract

[Also in Groups XV and XVI] In a wrapping-machine in which the wrappers are provided with tearing strips, a web of tearing strip t is fed by rollers 33, 34 through a groove I in a pivoted guide block 10 and over a roller 12 which applies adhesive to the underside thereof, the block 10 being swung about its pivot 40 periodically by a camoperated arm 39 to lift the web from the roller so that spaced portions thereof are left free of adhesive. The upper surface of the web is then engaged by the run of a perforated end less belt 13 which travels in engagement with the slotted under surface of a suction box 15, the suction applied through the perforations holding the web against the belt. A bar 17 carried by a spring-loaded arm 18 is arranged to hold the web away from the belt while a rotary knife 19 cuts through the portions which are free of adhesive. The belt is driven at a greater speed than the rollers 33, 34 so that slip occurs between the belt and web prior to the severing operation and the severed tearing strips are spaced one from another on the belt. A web w of wrapping material is fed over guide rollers 65-68 so as to pass transversely and substantially horizontally below the lower run of the belt 13, and as each tearing strip is positioned over the web, the latter is lifted into contact therewith by a roller 20, carried by cam-operated arms, so that the strip is adhesively secured to the web and removed from the belt. The web w is formed with slits 80, Fig. 13, at intervals by knives 82 and the tearing strips are attached between the slits. The web t passes from a supply roll 21 between adjustable tensioning members 24, 25 and then through a heated ironing device 27-29 which removes twist or curl. The timing of the various mechanisms is adjustable to vary the length of the tearing strips cut from the web.
