Apparatus for feeding laundry articles to an ironing machine comprises a beam which is adapted to support the leading edge of an article and is rotatable with a shaft disposed above conveyor means with its axis normal to the direction of feed, a one-revolution coupling adapted to stop the shaft in a position wherein the beam is readily accessible to an operator and adapted, after starting, to move the beam downwards towards the conveyor, and a roller parallel to and rotatable with the shaft and so arranged as to roll over the released leading portion of the article to keep the latter in contact with the conveyor. A hollow beam 8 is rigid with a hollow rotary shaft 7, whereby suction produced in the beam and shaft is applied, via apertures 27, to the leading edge of a sheet supported on the beam. Clamp jaws for releasaibly holding said leading edge are mounted on a carriage 25 slidable on the beam and movable thereon by means of a piston 29 in shaft 7. A rotor 6, journalled on shaft 7, comprises a pair of end plates 10 interconnected by a hollow member 9. Rollers 11a, 11b, 11c disposed with their axes parallel to that of shaft 7, are journalled in the outer ends of arms 12 which are pivoted at their inner ends, at 13, on the plates 10, and which carry intermediately rollers 14 engaging cam grooves 15 in respective fixed plates. The arrangement is such that when stator 6 rotates, the rollers are moved radially in succession from an inner position, as at 11b, to an outer position, as at 11a, in contact with the upper run of conveyor belts 5 carried by a driving roller 3 and driven roller 4. Rotor 6 is driven counterclockwise from the position shown by a one-revolution coupling. Rotor 6 is in turn so coupled to shaft 7 that the latter initially turns slower than rotor 6. Roller 11c thereby moves ahead of beam 8 to engage the upper run of belts 5 at a speed higher than that of the belts, to press the leading portion of the sheet, now released from beam 8, against the belts.
