[Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XV] In a labelling-machine such as described in Specification 645,729, [Group XV], the label web, having regularly spaced marginal indentations, is fed and severed by a knife-carrying roll which has its central portion cut away ahead of the knife, leaving marginal feeding portions of less width than the indentations in the web and a backing roll holding the web against the knife-carrying roll, so that the web is fed until the feeding action of the marginal portions of the knife-carrying roll is caused to cease by their passage into the marginal indentations of the web, so that the knife will sever the web in predetermined relation to the marginal indentations. A feeler 30, Fig. 5, adjustable in height for various sizes of packages, is attached to the machine by links 28, 32, 34 so that on being raised by a package passing underneath, a pawl 36 is released to clutch together a continuously rotating shaft 40, driven from the package conveyer 26, and a gear 45. The label web 113, Fig. 8, is fed under a tensioning roll 19 and between fixed rolls 48, 50 to a severing and feeding roll 70 driven by gear 45. The roll 70 is provided with a cutting blade 68 to sever the web and also with marginal feeding surfaces of less width than the indentations in the web, and a solid portion extending across its width. The marginal surfaces of the roll 70 in co-operation with a backing roll 75 feed the web until they engage the indentations of the web when the feeding stops, the roll continues to rotate until the knife 68 severs the web, and the label is drawn into the heating position as described in the above referred to Specification. At this stage, a pivoted web guiding device 78 moves under the action of a cam to free the severed end of the web from a fixed blade 67, and feeding rolls 48, 50 are moved together by a further cam to feed the web between the rolls 70, 75. The solid portion of the roll 70 then engages the web until the marginal indentations have been passed. Rolls 40, 50 move apart again and the operation is repeated. Roll 48 is rotated by gear 45 and is provided with a printing surface 63 which prints the desired indicia on each label as it passes.
