Abstract

1314727 Cutting webs XEROX CORP 30 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 20902/70 Heading B4B A method of cutting a sheet from a web of material while continuously feeding the leading portion of the sheet to an electrostatographic copier comprises, continuously feeding the leading portion of the web through a cutting station towards the copier, forming a buckle in the web between its leading portion and the cutting station, stopping the portion of the web in the cutting station after the desired length of web has passed therethrough, and cutting the web to form a sheet of the desired length. In apparatus described for performing the method, Fig. 2, a web 71 of paper or plastic is fed from a reel by a first pair of feed rollers 79, 83 through a cutting station 100 and then by a second pair of feed rollers 78, 80 to the drum of a xerographic apparatus. The rollers 78, 80 are driven more slowly than the rollers 79, 83 so that a buckle is formed in the web between the rollers 78, 80 and the station 100. At the cutting station 100, Fig. 3, is provided a fixed blade 82, and a blade 81 mounted on a pivoted arm 114 which is rotated clockwise, to cause the web to be cut, by engagement of a pusher 155 with a toggle latch 115 connected to the arm 114. The pusher 155 is operated by a cam mechanism which also controls a clutch in the drive to the feed rollers 79, 83, so that the feed rollers are stopped to hold the adjacent portion of the web stationary whilst the cutter blade operates. The feed rollers 78, 80 continue to rotate during cutting of the web, the buckle of excess web acting as the source of web for such feed. The cam mechanism controls the lengths of the sheets cut. A manually operable guide 126 may be pivoted to the position shown in dashed lines when it is desired that the sheet cut, e.g. the first sheet of a roll, is not fed to the xerographic apparatus.
