Abstract

433,880. Abrasive sheet material. CARBORUNDUM CO., Ltd., Trafford Park Road, Trafford Park, Manchester.-(Carborundum Co. ; Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 22, 1934, No. 5914. [Class 60] A flexible abrasive article, for example a sanding belt, comprises a backing of cloth, webbing or paper formed at least on one surface with a plurality of projections and granular abrasive secured by adhesive to the surface having the projections. Preferably the abrasive is secured only to the projections and the depth of the spaces between the projections is of the same order as the height of the abrasive coating. A ribbed or brocaded paper web 31, made by passing the paper during manufacture while still moist between an upper embossing roll and a lower plane roll, is guided from a roll 34 over rolls 35, 36 to receive a coating of glue from a roll 37. The paper then receives from a hopper 41 and rotating cylinder 42 abrasive grain 43, which adheres to the glue, the setting of which may be accelerated by a current of hot dry air. The coated paper then passes over a roller 44 in a downward direction and excess abrasive falls away from the depressions, assisted by a beater 45. The embossed portions of the fabric carrying the abrasive may be in the form of squares, rectangles or rhombi 51, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. or in the form of strips or bands as shown in Fig. 4.
