Abstract
434,186. Flexible abrasive articles. CARBORUNDUM CO., Ltd., Trafford Park Road, Trafford Park, Manchester.-(Carborundum Co. ; Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 22, 1934, No. 10632/35. Divided out of 433,880. [Class 60] [See also Group VIII] Flexible abrasive articles, such as sanding belts, are made by forming a non-uniform adhesive coating on a backing by localized pressure on the adhesive to prevent an adhesive coating on predetermined areas of the backing according to a regular pattern whilst permitting an adhesive coating on the remainder, applying granular abrasive to the coated surface and removing the less adherent grains from the backing. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 1, fabric is drawn from a roll 2 between a pair of rolls 3, 4. Adhesive is applied by the smooth roll 4 and projecting portions 6 of the patterned roll 3 press out adhesive from parts of the fabric leaving a coating on those parts lying opposite depressions 7. Abrasive grain is dropped on the fabric from a hopper 11 and excess is removed by bringing the fabric into a vertical plane, assisted by a beater 14. After drying, a sizing coating of adhesive may be applied. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a uniform coating is first applied by rolls 3<1>, 4<1> and is made non-uniform by passing the fabric between a smooth roll 16 and a patterned roll 15. Fig. 3 shows a form of apparatus in which adhesive is applied by a patterned roll 4<11>, which may be provided with a scraper 22, the depressions 19 providing a full adhesive coating, while raised portions 21 squeeze out the adhesive from the remainder. A. transfer roll may be used to supply the patterned roll with adhesive from the container. An additional patterned roll 24, Fig. 5, may be used to press adhesive from additional areas on the fabric. In a further modification the roll 24 is patterned similarly to the roll 4<11> and is supplied with talcum powder from a supply roll so that the powder is deposited on those portions of the fabric from which adhesive has been pressed by the roll 411. The patterned rolls may be formed by embossing, engraving, knurling or attaching strips of materials to the surface.
