Description

1. H. HOFFMAN.
PROCESS OF GUMMING THE EDGES 0F RIBBONS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, I918.
Patented Aipr. 15,1919.
I JOHN HENRY HOFFMAN, OF NEW YORK, N121, ASSIGNOB. '10 THEO. TIEDEHANN & SONS,
OFFICE.
DIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 01 NEW YORK.
' mocnss or GUMMING ran areas or nmnons.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY Horr- MAN a citizen of the United States, and a residntof the city of New York, county f Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Processes of Gumming the Edges of Ribbons, of which the followmg' is a specification. a
This invention relates generally to a process for applying gum or any suitable adbeing handled or used, I apply an additional coatmg of adhesive to the edge of the ribbon.
The object therefore of this invention is to provide a process by which the edges of the rolls of ribbon can be expeditlously coated with; an adhesive and by which the adhesive will be properly and evenly applied. The device by which my improved process is carried out forms the subject matter of my co nding application Serial No. 246,861, filed i ul 26th,1918.
With this and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in' view, Ifjhave devised the particular method of carrying out m invention set forth in the following spec' cation and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawing, forming av part hereof, m which Figure 1 is a perspective view of-the device through which the is applied to the edges of the rolls of r1 n; Y
f 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 0 arrows;

applied to. the edge 'of the roll of; ribbon;
I Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking'in the direction of the arrows.
' Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts. a p In carrying out my improved process, I make use of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1 indicates a frame of any desired-.form or dimensions. This frame comprises a base 2 and suitable uprights 8 The upper sideof the frame I is filled in by a covering of a porous or permeable, vflexible material, pre erably a textile material or cloth 3.
This sheet of material 3 is preferably placed upon aframe 4 which fits about the frame 1 so that sheets of material 3 can be readily removed or renewed when'desired.
In carrying out the process of applying the adhesive,-a roll of ribbon 5 is held be- L not stretched but is preferably placed loosely on its frame so that when the object to which the adhesive is to be applied, is placed beneath it, it canadapt or conform itself to the contours ,of variously shaped articles so that an even spreading of the adhesive throu hthe interstmesi of the covering is afiord After adhesive has been applied to the edges ofthe rolls of ribbon, their edges are sand-papered to remove any. surplus ad'- hesive or loose threads.
From the foregoing 't is obvious that my invention is not/.to be restricted to the exact process shown and described, but is broad enough to cover all processes coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
7, Having described my mvent1on,'what I claim is:
1.- The recess of applying to the edgeof rib 11 rolls consisting in supporting a ribbon roll beneath a sheet of flexlb e, permeable textile material which conforms to the surfaceon the roll to which the adhesive is to be applied, and applying an adhesive 2. The process of applying gum to the edge of ribbon rolls conslsting in supporting a ribbon roll beneath a sheet of flexible, textile permeable material which conforms to the surface OIlvthB roll to which the adhesive is to be applied, applying the adhesive by 10 brushing the. same through said sheet of material and smoothing the gummed surface of the roll after the adhesive has dried.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 23rd day of July, 1918.
7 JOHN HENRY HOFFMAN.
