Abstract

432,429. Coating webs. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, MELLOR, A., and MANN, R. J., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. Jan. 26, 1934, No. 2723. [Class 140] Apparatus for applying coating or filling material to a fabric comprises a pair of spaced rollers or other supports for the fabric, means to draw a length of fabric under tension over the supports, and a hopper positioned between the supports, one side of the hopper forming a spreading knife projecting below the level of the supports so that the fabric presses against the knife, and the other side of the hopper comprising a plate inclined to the knife and having its lower edge spaced therefrom to form a slot for the passage of coating material. Preferably, the width of the slot and the level and inclination of the spreading knife are adjustable. The fabric constitutes its own support for the coating material at the spreading point. The apparatus may be used for applying gum to the back of fabrics to be used as linings. As shown in Fig. 1, fabric 3 is unwound from a roll 4 and passes over rolls 5, 7 to a drying drum 8. The coating device, situated between rolls 5, 7 consists of a hopper, one side 6 of which has the form of a spreading knife. The lower edge of the knife 6 is below the level of the top of the rolls 5, 7 so that the fabric, which is under tension, is pressed against it. The level of the knife 6 is adjusted by handwheel and screw 10, and its inclination is adjusted by handwheel 19, worm 18 and wheel 17. The width of the slot between the sides 6 and 12 of the hopper, and consequently the size of the pool 20 of coating liquid in advance of the spreading knife 6 is regulated by means of the handwheel and screw 15. A stenter may be arranged in series with the drying apparatus. One or more drying drums may be provided, and if the coated side of the fabric has to be in contact with a drying drum, this should be provided with a flannel or similar covering.
