.1 This invention relates to afstrip coating machine and, more particularly, to a machine adapted to apply a coating "of a viscou liquid or pasty substance,.for. example roofing cement, to a predetermined width lot a strip of sheet material, .forexample, f'fel t 'roofing Tor flashing material.
In the application of felt roofing material as a flashing, or in similaruse's 'ofother strip materials, it is necessary toapply along part of the width of the strip a coating of cement to bind the strip toits supporting surface. Heretofore it has been customary to appl the cement with a pointing trowel. That 'method is laborious and time-consuming. and, accordingly, the cost of the labor required to apply the strip material is high. There haslong existed a need for a simple device adapted for use on building construction jobs, or the like, to facilitate the application of cement to stripsof material such as that used in roofing.
A principal object of this invehtion isto provide a machine or device of that character. Another object of the inventionis to provide such a machine whereby .str i'p material maybe coated.

According to this invention, afram'e or housing structure indicated generally at I defines a container or hopper 2 for holdinga supply of cement or other viscous liquid or pasty substance to be applied as .a coating, and defines also a passageway 3,, below a movable wall 4 of the container, which accommodates the 'strip material to be coated. The arrangement and construction are such that the strip material may be easily inserted into and drawn through the passageway, and as it passes beneath the container the coating substance may be applied continuously over any desired part of the width of the strip, the width of coating being regulated by a simple adjustment of the movable container wall 4.
As shown and hereinafter described more particularly, the wall 4 can be disposed in the closed position of Fig. 2, at which it completely closes the bottom of the container 2 and facilitates the filling of the container, or it can be moved laterally to any desired open position corresponding to a desired width of coating, as seen in Fig. '3. The strip material may be drawn beneath wall'd through passageway 3 from a suitable supply held at the back of the machine; for example.
from a roll 5 of the strip material wound on a spool 6 which in turn has trunnion I held rotatably in seats 8 of spaced brackets 9 projecting fromthe back wall of the frame I.
The frame or housing structure as shown comprises, more particularly, a rectangular base or bottom wall 0 supported on spaced feet I! and I2; spaced front and back walls [3 and M which extend Vertically from the front and back margins, respectively, of base It]; a vertical side wall l5 fixed between the front and back walls along one side of the frame; a side wall it fixed therebetween along the other side of the frame and slanted inwardly toward the base Ill as indicated at lSa; and the relatively movable side wall 4. The movable side wall 4 likewise extends between the front and back walls l3 and I4, but it lies inside the fixed vertical side wall I5 so as to slant inwardly toward the base I B from the upper part of wall l5. The movable Wall 4 is movable or adjustable laterally toward and away from fixed side wall it so that, in closed position, its lower edge abuts against a lower margin of the inwardly slanted portion 16a. In this position the container 2 is closed so that cement filled into it does not escape into the passageway 3. Wall 4 also can .be disposed laterally away from the slanted wall portion Ilia, as indicated in Fig. 3, to provide an open mouth it for the deliver of the coating substance from container 2 onto the upper surface of strip material 29 lying on base It in passageway 3. The movement or adjustmentof wall 4 to a desired position is facilitated, according to the illustrative embodiment, by making this wall with two relatively slidable sections 4a and 4b, the upper section la being hinged at 2! to an upper portion of vertical side wall [5 and the lower section db being slidably connected and 4a. through, for example, slots 22 in section to that slidably receive headed studs 22a projecting through the slots from section 411.
In movements of wall 4, its lower edge is held at a desired horizontal level by means of horizontal guides 2! fixed along the insides of front and back walls 13 and i l and received by cooperating grooves 28 formed in side edges of movable Wall section 4b. The guides preferably hold the lower edge of 4b at a height above the surface of base H1 corresponding approximately to the thickness of the strip material 20, so that coating material delivered through mouth [8 to the strip material in operation of the machine does not flow appreciably beyond the desired width determined by the setting of the movable wall.
The positioning of wall 4 maybe effected conveniently by means ofa lever or handle 23 which extends from section ib to a location outside the outline of frame l where it is accessible for easy manipulation. ,For example, handle 23 may be hinged to section 4b as indicated at 24 and may extend laterally through a vertically elongated opening 25in side wall It opposite the hinge connection, to, terminate at end portion 23a. The lower side of the handle body 23 may be formed with a series of notches or serrations 25 adapted to engage over the lower margin of opening 25. Thus movable wall 4 may be set at any desired position by simply raising handle 23 by hand, moving it to dispose wall e either at closed position or at a desired extent of opening, and then lowering the handle to engage the appropriate notch 26 with the margin of 25.
The passageway 3 accommodating the strip material 20 has front and back horizontal end slots 30 and 3|, respectively, formed by cutting away the lower marginal portions of the front and back walls [3 and M above base ill horizontally between the lower edges of side walls 15 and I6. These end slots are in alignment with one another and with the strip material 29 unwound from roll 5.
In order to facilitate inserting the strip material into its passageway when commencing the use of the machine, the fixed vertical side wall I5 has its lower margin cut away horizontally over the base H] to provide a horizontal slot 32 opening laterally into the passageway 3 as a continuation of end slots 3!] and 3 i A hinged closure or leaf 33 may be pivoted as at 34 to the outside of wall l5 so as to rest normally on base I across the side opening or slot 32, and yet so as to be lifted by thumb-piece 35, to clear this opening or slot, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1.
In the lifted position of leaf 33, a leading portion of strip material unwound from roll may be moved laterally into passageway 3 so as to extend through its end slots 38 and 3f with one edge of the strip positioned adjacent the lower edge of Wall portion lBa, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The leaf 33 now may be allowed to drop, holding the strip material in place. The movable container wall 4 having been closed during this stripplacing operation, and container 2 having been filled, wall 4 is now opened to its desired working position as above described and seen, for example, in Fig. 3. The machine then is operative to deliver the coating substance from container 2 onto that part of the width of strip 20 which bridges the container mouth l8, and as the strip material 20 is pulled from the front of the apparatus it issues with the coating applied continuously over the desired part of its width.

provided with adjustment means of any suitable construction.
It will be evident that this invention provides a simple and inexpensive machine for the coating of strip material with cement or a similar plastic or pasty substance which applies the coating substance over any desired part of the width of the strip material and is so easy to operate that skilled artists are not required for its use. The coating is applied quickly and continuously over the strip material for as long as the latter is pulled through the machine and the supply of coating substance lasts. Accordingly, the machine here provided is especially well suited for applying cement to flashingstrips, or for other service of like nature, in useby workmen on build,- ing construction projects.

1. A machine for applying a coating substance to strip material, comprising a frame including a base, spaced front and back wall extending vertically from the base, spaced side walls extending between the front and back walls to formtherewith a container for the coating substance, one of said side walls being movable relative to the other, said movable wall having a lower edge abutting said fixed wall in one position toclose said container at its bottom and being displace stance, one of said side walls being movable relative to the other, said movable wall having a lower edge abutting said fixed wall in one position to close said container at its bottom and being displaceable laterally to open said container to a desired Width at its bottom, and a passageway for movement of the strip material extending over said base beneath and transverse to the path of said movable wall and longitudinally of its lower edge, said front and back walls providing aligned horizontal slots over said base forming, end of said passageway to accommodate the strip material. a
3. A machine for applying a coating substance to strip material, comprising a frame including.
a base, spaced front and back walls extending vertically from the base, spaced side walls extending between the front and back wallsto form therewith a container for the coating substance, one of said side walls being movable relative to the other, said movable wall having a loweredge abutting said fixed wall in one position to close said container at its bottom and being displacee able laterally to open said container to adesired width at its bottom, and a passageway for movement of the strip materialextending over said base beneath and transverse to the path of said movable wall and longitudinally of its lower edge, and a support at the back of said frame to hold a supply of the strip material in position for movement through said passageway.
4. A machine for coating strip material comprising a frame including a base, spaced front and back walls extending upwardly from the base and a vertical side wall fixed therebetween along one side of the frame, a side wall fixed therebetween along the other side of the frame and slanted inwardly to said base, a movable wall therebetween having an upper portion adjacent an upper part of said vertical side wall and slanted inwardly therefrom in closed position to engage said slanted wall at its lower edge, thereby forming a container closed at the bottom to hold a supply of the coating substance, a passageway for movement of the strip material extending over said base beneath said movable wall and longitudinally of said lower edge in space between said vertical and said slanted side walls, said front and back walls having aligned horizontally elongated slots forming ends of said passageway, said vertical side wall providing a horizontal opening over said base in communication with said slots and passageway and through which a strip material to be coated is insertable laterally into said passageway.
5. A machine for coating strip material comprising a frame including a base, spaced front and back walls extending upwardly from the base and a vertical side wall fixed therebetween along one side of the frame, a side wall fixedtherebetween along the other side of the frame and slanted inwardly to said base, a movable wall therebetween having an upper portion adjacent an upper part of said vertical side wall and slanted inwardly therefrom in closed position to engage said slanted wall at its lower edge, thereby forming a container closed at the bottom to hold a supply of the coating substance, a passageway for movement of the strip material extending over said base beneath said movable wall and longitudinally of said lower edge in space between said vertical and said slanted side walls, said front and back walls having aligned horizontally elongated slots forming ends of said passageway, said vertical side wall providing a horizontal opening over said base in communication with said slots and passageway and through which a strip material to be coated is insertable laterally into said passageway, and a retainer comprising a leaf pivoted to said vertical side wall, normally resting on said base across said opening, and swingable vertically to clear said openmg.
6. A machine for coating strip material comprising'a frame including a base, spaced front and back walls extending upwardly from the base and a vertical side wall fixed therebetween along one side of the frame, a side wall fixed therebetween along the other side of the frame and slanted inwardly to said base, a movable wall therebetween having anupper portion adjacent an upper part of said vertical side wall and slanted inwardly therefrom in closed position to engage said slanted wall at its lower edge, thereby forming a container closed at the bottom to hold a supply of the coating substance, a passageway for movement of the strip material extending over said base beneath said movable wall and longitudinally of said lower edge in space between said vertical and said slanted side walls, said front and back walls having aligned horizontally elongated slots forming ends of said passageway, said vertical side wall providing a horizontal openin over said base in communication with said slots and passageway and through which a strip material to be coated is insertable laterally into said passageway, and a handle extending outside said frame from said movable wall for locating the latter at desired positions, said handle having a hinge connection to said movable wall, said vertical side wall having an opening opposite said connection, said handle extending through said opening and having spaced notches along one edge to engage a margin of said opening and hold the movable wall at any of several positions relative to said slanted side wall.

A machine for coating strip material comprising a frame including a base, spaced front and back walls extending upwardly from the base and a vertical side wall fixed therebetween along one side of the frame, a side wall fixed therebetween along the other side of the frame and slanted inwardly to said base, a movable wall therebetween having an upper portion adjacent an upper part of said vertical side wall and slanted inwardly therefrom in closed position to engage said slanted wall at its lower edge. thereby forming a container closed at the bottom to hold a supply of the coating substance, a passageway for movement of the strip material extending over said base beneath said movable wall and longitudinally of said lower edge in space between said vertical and said slanted side walls,
' said front and back walls having aligned horizontally elongated slots forming ends of said passageway, said vertical side wall providing a horizontal opening over said base in communication with said slots and passageway and through which a strip material to be coated is insertable laterally into said passageway, said movable wall comprising relatively slidable upper and lower sections, said upper section being hinged to said vertical wall.

A machine for coating strip material comprising a frame including a base, spaced front and back walls extending upwardly from the base and a vertical side wall fixed therebetween along one side of the frame, a side wall fixed therebe- 'longitudinally of said lower edge in space between said vertical and said slanted side walls, said front and back wall having aligned horizontally elongated slots forming ends of said passageway, said vertical side wall providing a horizontal opening over said base in communication with said slots and passageway and through which a strip material to be coated is insertable laterally into said passageway, and horizontal guide means on said front and back wall for guiding the lower edge of said movable wall in a horizontal path over the surface of strip material in said passageway.
