Application April 1, 1955, Serial N0. 498,623
3 Claims. (Cl. 118-413) The present invention relates to a device for applying cement or other adhesive to a wall joint tape.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a device which automatically applies the right amount of cement or other adhesive to a roll of wall joint tape as the roll is unwound.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cement applicator for wall joint tapes which is readily taken apart for cleaning, and one which may be partially taken apart for cleaning without emptying the hopper of its load of cement.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a cement applicator for wall joint tapes which applies the cement to the tape with more cement in the center of the tape than along the side edges.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a cement applicator for wall joint tapes which is sturdy in construction, able to withstand hard usage, and one which is economical to manufacture and is highly efiective in action.
' These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which: i t
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the applicator of the present invention showing in dotted lines a roll of wall joint tape carried thereon;
Figure 2 is a side view in cross section on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical view partially in cross section on line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a partial view in cross section on line 4-4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is an end view on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the present invention consists in an adhesive applicator having a horizontally disposed base with legs 11 for supporting the base on a table, bench, of other surface, and having a hopper 12 rising from the base 10 with one end 13 of the hopper adjacent the one end 14 of the base.
The base 10 has a wide slot or opening 15 extending inwardly from the one end 14 longitudinally of the base, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3, the hopper 12 having an open bottom overlying and in registry with the opening 15 in the base when the hopper is secured to the base. The sides of the opening 15 support a slidable closure member embodying a plate 16 formed with top and bottom flanges 17 and 18, respectively, as best seen in Figure 4. One end of the plate 16 has a beveled edge as indicated by the reference numeral 19 which, with the portion 20 of the base 10 adjacent the inner end of the opening 15, provides a slotted passage for the intermediate portion of a roll of wall joint tape, the roll being shown in dotted lines in Figures 1 and 2 and indicated by the reference numeral 21.
2,179,307 Patented Jan. 29, 1957 The one end 13 of the hopper 12 has a dispensing aper ture 22 (Figure 4) connected in communication with the opening 15 in the base 10, the outer wall of the hopper at that end having guide strips 23 and a cross bar 24 with a locking thumb screw 25 for holding a scraper blade 26 over the aperture 22. The lower edge 27 of the blade 26 is arcuately curved as seen in Figures 1 and 4 so that the cement is applied thicker in the center of the tape than along the edges.
The other end of the base 10 is provided with a recess 28 in its upper face, there being a bridge element 29 in the center of the base having upstanding ribs 30 on which slides a second closure member embodying a second plate 31. The recess 28 extends longitudinally on the base and has one end extending into the hopper with the sides of the recess contiguous with the sides of the opening 15 so that when the plate 16 ismoved from its position closing the bottom of the hopper and the opening in the base, a second plate 31 may he slid from its position in the recess in the upper face of the base exteriorly of the hopper to a position within the hopper closing the opening in the base.
The first plate 16 has its other end projecting from the opening in the base and provided with an upturned lip 32 forming a handle for pulling the plate 16 from the base.
An arm 33 projects upwardly from the end of the base remote from the hopper and has a projecting shaft 34 for supporting the roll of tape. A stop 35 on one end of the plate 31 prevents a total removal of the plate 31 from Within the hopper, and another stop 36 on the other end prevents the plate 31 from going further into the hopper than is necessary to close the opening 15.
The hopper is secured to the base 10 by means of its outwardly projecting flanges 37 which are locked to the base by means of L-shaped bolts 38, there being provided positioning pins 39 in the base 10 and cooperating notches in the ends of the flanges 37 for locating the hopper upon the base 10.
The plate 16 is locked within the hopper by means of another L-shaped bolt 40 projecting through a threaded opening in the side of the base 10. A handle 41 is provided on the end of the plate 31 so that the plate 16 may be pushed from its position closing the opening in the base 10 outwardly to a position exteriorly of the hopper for cleaning and adjustment of the tape.
When a roll of tape is used up, a new roll is placed on the shaft 34 and the free end of the roll is passed under the base between the legs to the end 14 of the base. The plate 31 is then pushed inwardly ejecting the plate 16 as it reaches its position closing the opening. The plate 16 is then placed under the end portion of the tape and is reinserted in the opening, pushing the plate 31 back to its original position and making the applicator ready for further use. I
As the tape is pulled outwardly over the plate 16, the proper amount of cement or other adhesive will be piled upon the top of the tape and smoothed by the blade 26.
The top flanges 17 of the plate 16 form guideways for keeping the intermediate portion of the roll of tape positioned within the hopper 12.
