Abstract

<PICT:0791553/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0791553/IV (a)/2> A compressively shrinkable sheet material is ornamented by compressively shrinking it in contact with a second sheet material which buckles, the buckles so formed being transferred to the first material. The compressively shrinkable materials include regenerated cellulose and plastic sheets. The second material may be of paper, cardboard, a plastic, thin sheet metal, a fabric stiffened by a resin, starch or other agent, or a fabric so woven that it will not readily shrink, but tends to buckle if compressively shrunk alone. The compressively shrinkable material may be of nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or other thermoplastic which may be heated during treatment to maintain the ornamentation or may be pre-treated with a temporary plasticizer or with an agent which will set by heat applied during or after the ornamentation or by a chemical reagent applied after the ornamentation. The compressively shrinkable material may be disposed between two sheets of material which buckles during treatment, and compressive shrinking may be applied discontinuously over the surface. As shown in Fig. 1, the compressively shrinkable material 16 is fed on to a thick rubber or like belt 11 passing around rollers 12, 13 at a point in advance of that at which the belt begins to contract, and the second sheet material 17 is also fed from a roll 15 into the nip between the belt 11 and a roller 14. In the apparatus of Fig. 2, the compressively shrinkable material 23 and and the second material 24 are fed into an inlet nip between a roller 20 and an electrically heated bed plate 21, and emerge from an outlet nip formed by the roller 20 and a roller 22, the roller 20, which has a hard rubber surface, rotating faster than the roller 22, which has a soft rubber surface. Discontinuous apparatus, e.g. a press, one face of which may be caused to contract in length, may also be used.
