Abstract
Fibrous sheet material, such as paper is compressively creped in a substantially dry condition, i.e. up to 15% moisture content, by passing a web of the material through the nip of a pair of rolls, one roll having a hard surface and the other, an elastic roll, having a surface hardness of from 10 degrees to 45 degrees (Shore durometer) the hard roll being driven at a surface speed greater than the speed of said elastic roll. The surface of the hard roll may be provided with an embossing pattern, e.g. to provide extensibility in the cross direction of the web. Two or more plies of paper may be passed through the nip together to produce a laminated, creped and, if desired, embossed product in which the plies adhere to each other by interlocked fibres and crinkles. In operation the surface of the soft roll stretches as it approaches the centre of the nip, then contracts and moves against the direction of travel of the web thus creping the sheet material. The surface of the material in contact with the hard roll is rendered smoother than the surface in contact with the elastic roll. The hard roll surface may be of mild steel, granite or other stone material.
