Abstract
Textile or paper articles are impregnated and sized by applying a quantity of latex dispersion containing from about 60 per cent to 75 per cent of dry rubber to the surface of the article or to a plate or plates, subjecting the article to pressure between said plates to cause the latex dispersion to penetrate into its pores, and then suddenly releasing the pressure, thus bringing about coagulation of the latex. Dyes, fillers, plastifiers, vulcanizing or preserving agents may be added to the latex. The pressure may be applied by a press, the co-operating plates of which may have complementary raised or sunk patterns. The latex may be applied directly to both surfaces of the material by a spray-gun, roller or scraper, or by dipping, or it may be coated on a flat surface, as a pattern or otherwise, and applied to one or both surfaces of the material under pressure. The impregnated material may be heated to vulcanize the rubber, if necessary, and dried; the material may be dried before impregnation, and subsequent drying omitted.
