Abstract

A method of dressing and/or glueing webs, defined as meaning webs, threads and nonwoven fabrics, comprises applying to the web an aqueous solution, dispersion or foam of vegetable, animal or synthetic solvent-activatable adhesive, e.g. leather glue and polyvinyl acetate, which contains at least two parts by weight of water to every three parts by weight of solid matter, and the web is then dried by contacting the treated side thereof with a heated roller or rollers the temperature of which is between 170 DEG and 230 DEG C. The aqueous solution, dispersion or foam may contain a substance for lowering the interfacial tension, e.g. ethylene oxide addition products or alkyl-aryl sulphonates such as tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate, and may be applied to the web by means of a flat or roller squeegee prior to being dried without the application of pressure on smooth hot rollers to produce a smooth glossy surface. The coating may also contain fillers, e.g. kaolin, china clay, talc, latex and rubber; loading agents, e.g. epsomite and pigments; chemicals for lowering inflammability; softeners, e.g. sulphonated oils and phthalic acid derivatives; and urea, glycerine and hardening agents. The web may be of short fibred wood pulp, or a cotton fabric, woven jute carpet, or a web comprising a mixture of reclaimed wool and regenerated cellulose.
