Abstract

A method of stiffening portions of the uppers of footwear comprises coating the upper material, which may consist of any of the following materials: natural or synthetic skins or leathers, textile or fibre materials such as woven or knitted fabrics, felts, impregnated fleeces, linen webs, wool, cotton wool, perlon, nylon, bast or straw, with an aqueous dispersion or solution of a synthetic resin or of synthetic resin forming components for strengthening the elastomers and, if desired, wetting and thickening agents, stabilizers and hardeners and subsequently drying the coated uppers on a last or subjecting them to heat treatment. The elastomers are natural rubber or polymers formed from starting materials containing more than 50 per cent of a compound having conjugate double bonds and include synthetic rubber such as polyisoprene, polychlorobutadiene, copolymers of butadiene and styrene, acrylic nitrile, isobutylene, vinyl pyridine and alkyl derivatives thereof, block and gaff copolymers of elastomers with polyvinyl compounds. The synthetic resins are water-soluble preliminary condensation products of condensation resins such as phenol-formaldehyde or aminoplastic resins or aqueous dispersions of thermoplastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyacrylic acid ester and polymethacrylic acid ester.
