Abstract

A method of producing a bonded fibre fabric comprises applying to staple polyacrylonitrile fibres a latent solvent, i.e. a substance which may be activated to become a solvent for the fibres, forming the fibres into a web and activating the solvent, e.g. by heating. Included in the term "polyacrylonitrile" are monopolymers of acrylonitrile and copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile units. Suitable comonomers include styrene, methyl acrylate, itaconic acid, methallyl sulphonic acid and its salts, vinyl acetate and vinyl pyridine. Suitable latent solvents are disubstituted formamides, e.g. bis-cyanoethyl formamide. Tetra-methylene sulphone and propylene carbonate are also suitable. The latent solvents, which comprise less than 25% by weight of the final product, may be applied by spraying or drip feeding, uniformly or at spaced areas to the staple fibres before being carded to form a web. The fibres may be crimped in which case the crimping of the fibres is preferably steam-set. Hot air directed on to the web of material to be bonded may be used to activate the latent solvents.
