Abstract

A method of making felt hats from mixtures of natural and synthetic fibres comprises depositing the fibres by suction on a perforated conical support, treating the resultant felt body with a binding agent comprising a solution, dispersion or emulsion of at least one synthetic plastics material and curing the plastics material by heat treatment. The felt body is preferably slightly stiffened before treatment with the binding agent by spraying with p hot water, is milled on a conventional milling or felting machine and dried in a centrifugal drum. The felt body after immersion in or spraying with synthetic plastics material is passed through rollers and may be stretched by steam heating it on a metal form slightly larger than the conical support. The body is then dried at 70 DEG C. and finally subjected to a temperature of 100 DEG -170 DEG C. for five minutes. Suggested natural fibres are hare or rabbit hair and wool. Suggested synthetic fibres are polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyurethane, polyvinyl and polyterephthalic acid ester fibres. In a mixture of fibres, a preferred ratio of natural to synthetic fibres is 70 : 30. Suggested components of the binding agent are vinyl polymers, e.g. PVC, polyalkenes, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, dienes, e.g. polybutadiene, acrylic esters and derivatives thereof, e.g. methacrylic acid butyl ester, amides of e.g. polymethacrylic acid and aminoplasts, e.g. formaldehyde precondensates of melamine. Ammonium chloride is used as a catalyst.ALSO:A method of making felt hats from mixtures of natural and synthetic fibres comprises depositing the fibres by suction on a perforated conical support, treating the resultant felt body with a binding agent comprising a solution, dispersion or emulsion of at least one synthetic plastics material and curing the plastics material by heat treatment.
