Abstract

A process for the production, from a tow of stretched acrylonitrile polymer filaments, of a filamentary structure in which the filaments are cross-linked so that they may be laterally extended for example to a width of 4 or 5 yds. to form a net, comprises subjecting the tow, in which the acrylonitrile content is at least 70% and in which the filaments are in the form of an aqueous gel containing, for each 100 parts of polymer (reckoned as dry) 100-300 parts of water and at least 0,5 parts of an organic solvent for the polymer, to a temperature of at least 65 DEG C. The tow may be stretched in the spinning zone-i.e. in the coagulating bath or dry spinning cell-and also after having been washed. The tow is preferably opened-by a turbulent gasbefore being introduced on a perforated travelling belt to a chamber through which hot air is circulated. The filamentary structure produced may be heat-relaxed or stabilized stretched, crimped-for p example in a stuffer box-, or dyed. The acrylontrile polymer may be a homopolymer, copolymer or a graft copolymer, and may include up to 30% of one or more ethylenic monomers copolymerisable therewith, for example vinyl, vinyl sulphonic and acrylic compounds. The solvent may be N-formylated amines, dimethyl-sulphoxide, g -butyrolactone or dimethylacetamide.
