Abstract
1334265 Treating fibre tows MONSANTO CO 28 June 1971 [29 June 1970 30 June 1970 (2)] 30186/71 Heading D1L In the treating of a tow of synthetic filaments with a liquid the tow is advanced through a confined zone in which liquid is forced through it, the flow rate being at least where T is the thickness of the stream of liquid in inches, # is the width of the confined zone, h is the height of the confined zone, N is the number of filaments in the tow, Á is the viscosity of the liquid in pounds/foot-second, and p is the density of the liquid in pounds/ cubic foot. The apparatus which may be used is as illustrated in Fig. 1, the tow 15 advancing through the apparatus with liquid being passed through the inlet 21 and so through the tow and then passing back through at locations 23. The liquid may pass through again and back after leaving the outlet. In the apparatus the dimension h is the thickness of the tow (the vertical distance between surfaces 18 and 19). After leaving the outlet the liquid falls to a reservoir to be recirculated, the overflow from this reservoir being passed to a preceding similar apparatus (if there is one) and the reservoir receiving overflow from a succeeding bath (if there is one, or fresh liquid otherwise). The liquid may be water, to wash the tow, it may be heated water (or ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol) to heat the tow so that stretching thereof may be effected, the tow having just come from a spinning bath, or it may be a dye solution, to dye the newly spun fibres in a gel state. The tow may comprise acrylonitrile filaments, with a proportion (e.g. 7%) of vinyl acetate.
