Abstract

998,990. High shrinkage polyacrylonitrile fibres. MONSANTO CO. Feb. 26, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 7597/63. Heading B5B. Filaments of synthetic linear polymers, composed of at least 80% by weight polyacrylonitrile, which exhibit high shrinkage when immersed in boiling water or subjected to dry heat, are produced by first subjecting the filaments after spinning to a stretching step at a low ratio stretch ratio in the range of 1À5 to 2À5 while they are being passed through a bath of boiling water, subjecting the stretched filaments to wet steam under a pressure of 35-55 p.s.i.g., then subjecting the filaments to a second stretching step at a low ratio stretch in the range of 1À7 to 3À0 while they are being passed through a water bath maintained at 70 to 95‹ C.; then cooling the filaments under tension and at constant length and thereafter drying them, at a temperature below 70‹ C. The fibres may be composed of a copolymer of 94% by weight of polyacrylonitrile and 6% by weight of polyvinyl acetate, or of a blend of 88% by weight of the above copolymer and 12% of a copolymer of 50% polyacrylonitrile and 50% methyl vinyl pyridine.
