Abstract
Acrylic threads and fibres with a shrinkage in boiling water of up to 50% are formed by a wet-spinning process from at least one soln. of acrylic polymers extruded into a coagulating bath contg. 40-60% water and 60-40% of an organic solvent. The newly-formed filaments are drawn between 1.3 and 3-fold at ambient temp., then washed in water and drawn between 1 and 2.5-fold in boiling water. Size or lubricant is applied and the filaments are dried at a temp. between 80-140 degrees C., then given a steam treatment at from 105-150 degrees C., followed by a final drawing of 1.2 to 2-fold at 90-100 degrees C. The filaments may be dyed at any stage of prodn., and may finally be crimped and cut into staple fibre. The proposed method is more economic and more easily controlled than previously-known processes, and gives fibre with more uniform, higher shrinkage.
