Abstract

1,204,860. Acrylonitrile copolymer. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. 29 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 39512/67. Heading B5B. Soil-resistant filaments of acrylonitrile copolymers are produced by extruding a solution of the polymer in dimethyl formamide (DMF) into a stream of essentially aliphatic hydrocarbons of initial boiling point above 140‹ C., preferably kerosene, and containing not more than 2% by weight of aromatic hydrocarbons, to precipitate the polymer and to form the filaments, the stream being maintained between 100‹ to 150‹ C. Residual DMF is removed from the filaments by washing in hot water until the filaments contain less than 2% by weight of DMF, which are then dried above 100‹ C., tension being applied to the filaments during the washing and drying steps. A final stretching and orientation of the filaments is then carried out above 175‹ C. The filaments can then be relaxed in a chamber with wet steam and allowed to shrink before crimping, followed by steam setting and cutting into fibres. Preferably, the extruded filaments are fed countercurrent to the stream of kerosene and are preferably dried by passage over heated rollers. The acrylonitrile copolymers used are those described in patent Specification 824,225 and include copolymers of acrylonitrile with acrylic and methaorylic acid, esters and amides thereof and comprise at least 85 mol. per cent of acrylonitrile and up to 15% of copolymerizable comonomer. The filaments have a very smooth outer surface, but have numerous internal closed cavities, and preferably contain not more than 6% by weight of hydrocarbons.
