Abstract

1,241,676. High shrinkage threads, yarns and fibres. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 5 Sept., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 42278/68. Heading B5B. High shrinkage threads, yarn and fibres are produced from acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers containing at least 50% by weight of polymerized acrylonitrile and mixtures thereof, by exposing the filaments obtained by a dry spinning process to temperatures of 110‹ C. to 160‹ C. in the presence of steam, followed by stretching in water and drying at temperatures below 100‹ C. Two methods of steam treatment are described: (1) a dry heat treatment of the wet spun material which preferably contains at least 15% by weight of water; and (2) a hot steam treatment of dry or only moist spun material. In a discontinuous process the wet spun material is introduced in a freely shrinkable state into a heated chamber and an atmosphere of steam is produced by evaporation of water in the material. Saturated steam under pressure may also be used in the pressure chamber particularly when the spun material contains little or no water. The process may also be carried out continuously using as transport elements, drum sieves or rollers having different speeds of rotation, or belts. The steam treated thread may be stretched to 180 to 320% of its initial length, prior to being shrunk by steam, in water at temperatures below 100‹ C.. In the examples stretching temperatures of 75‹ C. and 85‹ C. are used. The polymers are obtained by copolymerization of acrylonitrile with one or more copolymerizable mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer such as methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl bromide, styrene, α- methyl-styrene, esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids, vinyl esters, amides of monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids, and the acids themselves, vinyl sulphonic acid, styrene sulphonic acid, m-methacryloylaminodiphenyldisulphide, N - N - dimethylhydrazide or vinyl pyridines. Inorganic and/or organic pigments such as TiO 2 , or colour pigments or soluble additives may be incorporated in the threads when spinning.
