Abstract

<PICT:0581526/IV/1> <PICT:0581526/IV/2> The tenacity of untwisted yarn consisting of a polymer of acrylonitrile is increased by spreading the filaments of the yarn into ribbon formation, passing the ribbon over a hot cylindrical surface whereby the filaments are rendered plastic, and stretching the yarn while the filaments thereof are spread out and in the plastic state. Referring to Fig. 1, untwisted polyacrylonitrile yarn is fed from thread advancing roller 2 and snubbing roller 1, through a yarn spreading device 3 on to heated roll 4. Rolls 1 and 4 have the same peripheral speed and the yarn is withdrawn from roll 4 at a speed greater than the peripheral speed of roll 4, whereby it is stretched. After cooling the yarn may be twisted. The yarn spreading device comprises two resilient thin sheets 3 exerting a mild pressure against each other and, if desired, a number of such devices may be used in series. Alternatively, the spreading device may comprise a series of rods over which the yarn is passed. A device which directs air jets against the yarn so as to separate the filaments may be employed, or an electric charge may be applied to the yarn to cause the filaments to balloon out. The cylinder 4 is heated by, for example, electrical means, high pressure steam, or hot vapours or liquids. In a modification, a supplementary heating element 11 (Fig. 5) is affixed around roll 4, the yarn thus being heated from two sides. The time of contact of the yarn with the roll 4 may be controlled by the diameter and speed of the roll; or by the angle of contact of the yarn on the roll. In addition to polyacrylonitrile, the filaments of the yarn may consist of copolymers and interpolymers of acrylonitrile such as the interpolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl and acrylic compounds, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylic acid and its esters and homologues, styrene and isobutylene. Dyes, pigments and dye modifiers may be added to the polymeric materials.
