Threads, films &c. of thermoplastic material are stretched or shrunk by being passed around a heating pin of generally cylindrical form and of homogeneous and continuous structure, the pin having grooves in its surface so that the threads &c. only make contact with its heated surface, which is at a temperature below the melting point of the thread &c., between the grooves. The grooves may be rectangular, polygonal, semicircular or elliptical. As described, a 500 denier polyvinyl alcohol thread is stretched in a ratio 7 : 1 as it is passed around the roll.
