Abstract

A process for the production of potentially smooth and even yarns made from synthetic linear polymers, e.g. polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene and polyacrylonitrile, comprises hot-stretching the yarn, imparting to it during stretching such a low false twist that permanent crimping is avoided, there being no setting of the false twist, and withdrawing the yarn. The process is said to be especially adapted for hotstretching polyacrylonitrile yarns containing at least 85% of acrylonitrile, by weight, and from 5 to 8% of residual solvent, dimethylformamide, at temperatures of from 145 DEG to 170 DEG C. In an example, with the false twist device running at 10,000 r.p.m. and a yarn speed at feed and delivery of 130 and 850 metres p.m. respectively, the twist in the polyacrylonitrile yarn was about 80 and 12 yarns p. metre respectively, the drawing temperature being 150 DEG C.
