Abstract

1,061,626. Stretching polymethylene terephthalate filaments. FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc. July 1, 1964 [July 5, 1963], No.27129/64. Heading B5B. Polymethylene terephthalate filaments and yarns having randomly spaced thick and thin sections are produced by stretching an undrawn filament or yarn of the polymer having a birefringence of 0À0005 to 0À011 to from 2À8 to 3À6 times, preferably 3À0 to 3À5 times, its original length, at a temperature within the range from 15‹ C. to the second order transition temperature of the undrawn material at a " stretching speed " of from 75 to 1600 feet per minute. The " stretching speed " is defined as the rate at which the final product is taken from the stretching roller, i.e. the peripheral speed of the draw roller. The polymer may be polyethylene glycol terephthalate. The birefringence is preferably in the range 0À007 to 0À009 and the stretching temperature is preferably 30‹ to 65‹ C. The preferred stretching speed is 1100 to 1500 feet per minute. The filament or yarn may subsequently be heat treated at a temperature between 100‹ C. and 280‹ C., preferably between 200‹ and 220‹ C. for a period of time sufficient to provide a filament or yarn which will not shrink more than 10% of its original length. The heat treatment may be effected under a controlled tension or in the freely relaxed state.
