Abstract

Filaments or films consisting of polyesters of polybasic acids and polyhydric alcohols are treated with a nitrogen-free organic compound capable of reacting with the filaments or films at a temperature above 200 DEG C., advantageously above 220 DEG C., and more especially at a temperature near the melting point of the filament or film, and for a period within the range of 10-4 to 1 second such that only the surface of the filament or film reacts with the compound. The filament or film is preferably subjected to tension during the treatment. The process may be applied to filaments which have not been previously heat set and the treatment and heat setting may be carried out simultaneously. The treating agents may be aliphatic or aromatic mono- or di-carboxylic acids of high molecular weight, mono- or poly-hydric alcohols of high molecular weight, carbohydrates, sulphonic acids, phosphonic acids, or mono- or polyhydric phenols. In the examples, polyethylene terephthalate yarns are treated with glycerin, sebacic acid, lauric acid, and lauryl alcohol. Other treating agents specified are suberic acid, adipic acid, diphenylcarboxylic acid, naphthoic acid, phenoxy-benzoic acid, stearic acid, trans-cinnamic acid, ethylene triglycol, meta-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, ceryl alcohol, pentaerythritol, d-mannitol, pyrogallol, dihydroxydiphenyl, 3:5-dichlorophenol, and toluene sulphonic acid. The treatment improves the capacity of the filaments &c. for being dyed, especially with dispersion dyestuffs, without reducing their tensile strength.
