Abstract
Fibres, filaments and fabrics made from synthetic polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate and polymethyl methacrylate, are rendered antistatic more easily cleaned, hydrophilic or water repellent by treating them with a liquid organic substance of molecular weight greater than 120 which contains at least one weakly ionisable hydrogen atom such that it has a pK value of 9.5-24, contains no hydrogen atom having a pK value of less than 9.5 and is capable of generating an anion which is stable and soluble in the organic substance and which has been partially converted into its anion base by reaction with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or with a strong base derived therefrom, so that the organic substance is attached through ester or amide linkages to the polyester material. The organic compound may be formed by the polymerisation of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or mixtures thereof or it may be cetyl alcohol or a condensate of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with an alkyl, aryl or alkyl arylalcohol, phenol, amide, imide, amine or poly functional alcohol. Fabrics comprising polyester fibres in admixture with cotton may be treated.ALSO:Films and fabrics made from synthetic polyesters, e.g polyethylene terephthalate and polymethyl methacrylate, are rendered antistatic and more easily cleaned and their water absorption properties are modified by treating them with a liquid organic substance of molecular weight greater than 120 which contains at least one weakly ionisable hydrogen atom such that it has a pK value of 9.5-24, contains no hydrogen atom having a pK value of less than 9.5 and is capable of generating an anion which is stable and soluble in the organic substance and which has been partially converted into its anion base by reaction with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or with a strong base derived therefrom so that the organic substance is attached through ester or amide linkages to the polyester material. The organic compound may be formed by the polymerisation of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or mixtures thereof or it may be cetyl alcohol or a condensate of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with an alkyl, aryl or alkyl arylalcohol, phenol, amide, imide, amine or poly functional alcohol. Fabrics comprising polyester fibres in admixture with cotton may be treated. Treated films show improved adhesion to subsequent coatings of polyacrylic acid.
