Abstract

A modified polyester made by reacting together at least one compound selected from terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and their dimethyl esters, and at least one polymethylene glycol containing from 2-10 carbon atoms, with from 0,05 to 4,0 mol. per cent based on the weight of the first named compound, of a compound selected from monohydric polyalkylene oxides having the formula:- <FORM:0932028/IV(a)/1> wherein R is selected from alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, m and n are integers from 1 to 4 and x is an integer in the range of from 1-100, and with from 0,05 to 2,4 mol. per cent, preferably 0,1-1,0 mol. per cent, based on the weight of the first named compound, of a compound having the general formula R-(OH)n wherein R is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing from 3 to 6 carbon atoms and n is an integer of from 3 to 6, is spun to form filaments which are molecularly oriented by drawing and then heated to a temperature in the range of from 100 DEG -180 DEG C., preferably 135 DEG -150 DEG C. In a preferred method, the filaments are derived from a modified polyester made by reacting dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol with methoxy-polyethylene glycol and pentaerythritol. Monohydric polyalkylene oxides which may be used in place of methoxypolyethylene glycol are epoxypolyethylene glycol, propoxypolyethylene glycol, butoxypolyethylene glycol and methoxypolypropylene glycol. These substances function as chain-terminating agents. Compounds of the formula R-(OH)n which may be used in place of pentaerythritol are glycerol and sorbitol. These substances act as chain-branching or cross-linking agents. Filaments so made are of enhanced whiteness. U.S.A. Specification 2,895,946 is referred to.
